I wrote an article about changing the BG show and you would think I had advocated burning the flag,, don't mess with BG, what are you crazy,,,,. Well what show would you be willing to see try my format happen? The answer is none, not one. I remember when the NMFS changed to order of the trophy presentation from presenting the awards from 3 then 2 then 1st, just like every other sporting event in the known world, to 3rd 2nd and then 1st, people said why change it. Pulling is 1970 technology, 1970 rules and the same show since 1970. I just saw a couple posts about '' more money, more advertisers, you would think that the NTPA had never done that. The NTPA, PPL and Outlaws have reached out to every type of sponsor they can think of, yet when the IHRA/PPL comes in with a Fendt High Stakes Series then we spent hours trashing them. I talked with a puller that has 2 in the series and they told me that if they finish last in every events in the series their loss will $2000. Yet we complain. We want the sport to grow but don"t change anything. Well guess what, it's been the same show for 50+ years. Sure the vehicles look a little different but they all go about the same speed down the track, the same distances, and the same names. We want the sport to grow, however don"t you dare change anything. This is not about my article about changing the BG format, or how many thumps down I got, it's about wanting one thing and not willing to try anything. And I will ease your minds, I'm pretty sure that BG will not change their show because I wrote something. In ten years pulling will be the same and people will be saying " we need to grow the sport". Social media, pod casts, in themselves are great for the fans that the sport has, but we are still selling the same product year after year. People talk about the "good old days " of pulling, don't worry we still have the good old days.

With all the talk about more pay for pullers which I am not against, I am one and I agree, how are we improving pulling or the show by making a bigger purse. If we had a 50k, 100k or 1 million dollar pay out how would it improve show quality and bring more fans to watch or sell more live feeds?

In an earlier post I asked where does the added money come from to pay the pullers? How does the promoter benefit when they obviously have to pay more to have it and they are trying to make money normally for non profits money goes back into the community? Without more butts in the stands how do we pay bigger purses? More butts in the stands equals more concession, ticket, apparel sales, and draws more sponsorship attention

Dick brought up BG following suit and paying more and limiting numbers. How would this make the fan experience better making more people want to watch or go? Without the fan experience and money where does the added purse money come from and how do the Blue shirts make more money by paying more money to the pullers?

How does the bigger pay out draw more fans and spectators then a BG, Tomah, or Hillsboro with the same show?

IHRA fires Woodruff. Cuttell acted unprofessional

Scott Woodruff was in a video at the PRI show talking a bit about pulling. As you know, IHRA owns PPL now.
I urge people to read the attached article from competitionplus, a drag racing magazine. A few quotes are pasted below.

I ask you: Is this type of hotheaded leadership who says "make it happen" but doesn't want to hear about problems really what the sport of pulling needs? Names in bold have been in leadership positions since Cuttel bought IHRA and all gone within 15 months. Does this look like good leadership? Is firing a guy via text good leadership?

Scott Woodruff is out as Chief Operating Officer of Drag Racing at the International Hot Rod Association today, the latest executive departure during a turbulent rebuilding period for the sanctioning body.

Woodruff confirmed to CompetitionPlus.com that he was no longer with the IHRA and said the dismissal came unexpectedly.

“I am no longer with the IHRA and unfortunately for me and many others in the sport, I was very truthful about where we were as a sanctioning body,” Woodruff said.

CompetitionPlus.com reached out to IHRA management for comment on the dismissal. “Often you don’t finish the race with the same team you start with,” said IHRA President Leah Martin. “As IHRA continues to grow, we are building a team focused on transforming and strengthening the sport for the future.”

The move continued a pattern of executive turnover that has followed IHRA’s revival efforts since early 2025.

Leadership instability has become a recurring theme within the organization as it attempts to rebuild its national racing programs and strengthen relationships with racers and tracks. The rate of turnover has been high at the rejuvenated IHRA dating back to January 2025 when Kenny Nowling was relieved of his duties and replaced with former NHRA division director Rich Schaefer.

Second-generation marketing specialist Christian Byrd was brought in during the same period, as was longtime NHRA announcer Alan Reinhart. By the end of April, however, all three had exited the organization. Josh Peake was promoted to president shortly thereafter but was gone within a matter of months.

Woodruff joined IHRA over the summer in a role designed to help guide operational growth and improve communication with racers and industry partners. Brett Underwood, who was hired at the same time as Woodruff as IHRA’s Vice President of Publications, was also relieved of his duties.

Woodruff said the situation that led to his dismissal began when he raised concerns internally about the organization’s racer registration system. The system, he said, had created complications for competitors attempting to register for events.

“I spoke up the fact that we have a registration system that doesn’t work correctly for the racers,” Woodruff said. “They can’t maneuver through it and we can’t register any racers without having a system that they can use.”
Woodruff said he attempted to outline both the issues and the potential consequences of leaving them unresolved.

“It wasn’t received very well,” Woodruff said. “I explained the situation, I explained the consequences, and I explained reality, and nobody seemed to care.” According to Woodruff, the situation culminated with a brief message informing him that his time with the organization had ended.

“And out of nowhere, I get a text message from Darryl Cuttell, who’s the owner of the IHRA, just telling me I’m fired on a text message, so I don’t know."

Now that BG has started limiting the number entries ( Lmt. PS ) I would like to see BG run their events somewhat with the same format as the Fendt High Stakes Series. While I realize that the pullers are paying a portion of the purse running the Fendt Series, I think that BG could do it slightly different and make it work. How I see this working is this; limit all classes to 25 vehicles to be decided by the NTPA and the leadership of BG. Run what amounts to each session as an eliminator session with the top 3 to 7 top place finishers advancing to the Saturday evening session. I would probably bring back 14 from PS, 10 from Mini, TWD, Limited PS, 8 from SSD 4x4, FWD, Lt. Mod, and Mods. 6 from DSS, OSS, LSS, Unlimited Mods, and Semi's. I would consider bringing back SF if they are still a GN class. I believe that limiting the numbers to no more than 25 there would not be a need to add any more sessions. And I believe that there are several classes that don't have 25 in a class. The top 14 down to 6 in each class would be determined by a total of their combined distances in both sessions together. In the event of a rain out then the top finishers in a single session would be the qualifiers. This format would see a total of 106 vehicles coming back for the evening session, this would be rough fully 53 on either track. With hook times of 3.5 to 4 minutes between hooks the show should last between 3.5 to 4 hours long. I also think that this is the perfect place for the ring winners to be announced, win the Saturday evening session, win the ring. I can see fireworks, music and drama building towards the finals. With the purchase of the Outlaws by WPI and FPE there is a real possibility that the Bowling Green event could the best of the best one of a kind event.
