Just curious

I was a fan of the double stuff unlimited and was hoping it would work as I thought it could really shake up the class. Obviously it wasn’t around long, but I liked the idea of it. Could a guy throw 2 or 3 diesel pro or super stock 4x4 motors in an unlimited? Why or why not? Just curious. It’s cold as hell out and I’m bored.

I don't know what the unlimited make for HP but 3 DSS4x4 motors with all the newest tech would make 12000-13500 HP total but those are also 3 very expensive and complicated motors to build with intercoolers, piping, injection pumps, water pump....etc. Sure would be fun but what a project!

That twin 5.9 is awesome. I'd love it if we had more variety like that in the US. The Double Stuff tractor was really cool and one of my favorite mods too. A version of that with aluminum DT466 blocks would be awesome. I understand why pullers go with V8 Hemi power but it would be great for the sport in the US if some brave souls would think outside of the box and develop alternative options like they do in Europe.

In the netherlands there is a 7700lbs mod (Veldhuizen) with two alky Deeres (3 turbos) for roughly 10 years around.
Paperwise he shall be close to 8000hp, but can't compete with the usual triple hemi gang.
A few years ago he converted one of the engines to turn in opposed direction, to get rid of chassis twist and COG movement during the pull.
It helped alot at this aspect, since before that he frequently threw tires off the rim due to highwheeling.
But a thing that still seems hard to handle is the absence of power across the first dozens of feet.
And furthermore when the boost then suddenly kicks in, the increase of power is absolutely brutal.
So he is forced to screw down the draw bar to prevent that the front end will be thrown up sky high beyond the 80-100ft mark.
Maybe he would be happier with just one of these chunks in the 5500lbs mod.
But nevertheless until today, it's big fun to watch this thing, everytime spectacular, and at late noon when he got off the throttle this damn thing looks like a firebreathing dragon.

One reason you won't likley see more weight in the Unlimited class is the sleds and tires. They already have a hard time stopping them within a reasonable distance. I don't know how it is since Bauer changed his sleds two years ago but I know in the past they would have to borrow weights from a second sled to stop them on certain tracks. If you watch the distances they are usually closer to 350' than 300'. In order to put on a good show they need some speed they are then really hard to stop. The newer tires have a lot to do with it also, in the past it was harder to get the power to the track.

I had that conversation with Jeremy Wagler. He has looked into it with the DX460s like in Cummins Killer and Evil Diesel. 3 with 3 chargers is no problem. 4 with 1 big single is over unlimited weight. I forget the exact number, but it was a few hundred pounds. More than you could knock out of anywhere to make it up.

Thanks for the reply. I figured they had issues with the tractor motors, that’s why I was wondering about using the truck motors. I was thinking two or three ssd 4 X 4 engines might be able to make weight and have enough hp to be somewhat competitive. I know it’s just a pipe dream, but it would be cool to see something like that on the track.
