1850 oliver chain coupler December 13, 2011 12:32AM
Anybody know how hp the chain coupler on 1850 will take? jumping on the 5.9 bandwagon. thanks for any info

I use it on my 5.9 and have had no trouble, i welded the sprocket to the input shaft

Will the transmission input shaft hold 250-300 hp if there is a 1/4 inch chunk missing from the inside splines? probably got chipped out when a new coupler sprocket was put on.
would welding the sprocket to shaft make it weaker or stronger?

Used one on an Allison/55 Massey. Oughta hold a 5.9!

engine will be in the 300 hp range. buying new chain and sprockets. one guy told me it would only hold about 200hp on hard pull. any other problems you guys ran into

Did you really feel it was necessary to use the word "vintage"? "Cool picture" would have worked. Even "cool old picture". Just kidding!

Do you think it would hold in the neighborhood of 800hp?

yes

Re: 1850 oliver chain coupler December 15, 2011 04:39AM
It will hold anything that a 5.9 cummins could put to it. Don't worry.

Re: 1850 oliver chain coupler December 15, 2011 11:42AM
I know a guy in iowa that pulled a white super stock with a cummins with 4 chargers with that coupler and it never broke.

you will have no problem with the chain coupler but it is easy and cheap to change it to a splined coler

We have held 2 allisons with a chain coupler. We did finally break one after 10 years of abuse. Just keep an eye on the chain. When the rollers start disappearing put a new chain on.

The main thing is to keep your angles true when mounting the cummins.
