What are the thoughts of wheter or not Pettibone planetaries would hold up to LSS or say 8k SS? |

You may want to check on parts availability on Pettibone stuff, as well as PRICE of those parts.
For the light class you will want something lighter anyway. Full Pull has the cats butt set up, (aluminum housings for ZF((I think)) planetaries), but magnesium Franklins are hard to beat also. Engler has the lightest Mag Franklin housings you can find "off the shelf". |

this is what you want:
For sale Aluminium planetaries from Man /Mercedes Ratio 3.94/1 ; Also other ratios in stock Planetaries used on several modified : 2.5 / 3.5 and 4.5 ton and light super stock tractors paul.liefooghe@telenet.be If you are going to give it more than 5000 hp at 7500 lbs, you should buy two sets, make a new center piece carrier, cut the planetary gears so you can make use of the complete ring gear width by running two bigger planetary gear halves (which in total are wider than the original gear). That's what we did with ours on the 77 twin Allison. Put a complete season on that now, without touching them. What do those planetaries come off of? How much work to make them usable on a pulling rear. Thanks for the pic's. |

The alu version (i=3.94) was used on Mercedes army axles.
(They actually are built by MAN for Mercedes.) You can put MAN gears with i=3.48 in the alu carrier. The 3.48 gears come out of MAN axles used on todays trucks. Work you have to do depends on how much HP/torque you want to put on them. In Europe the alu version is mostly used as it is on the light modifieds and also on pro stock. For high HP you can make some adjustments: Reinforce the inner part that holds the spider axles (or put a steel inner part in). Replace the washers behind the spiders with needle bearings. Put in wider gears. We machined a complete new carrier out of billet Alu 7075 (with the wheel spacer on it, last 3 pictures in Sascha's post). Made some modifications and put needle bearings behind the spiders. The alu bearing housing can be used as it is. Mostly an alu adapter plate is welded on it to fit the break disc. Hope the info was usefull.... |

ANd not to forget - theses things are rather cheap - especially if you consider they are coming in aluminum already, are a lot smaller and lighter than anything Franklin -but due to the way the ring gear is built, material quality and also the 5 gear design are strong enough for the light and single engine classes.
They have given us a bunch of extra front end weight in the 5 and with the small modification we did by putting wider gears in also work well in the 7700 mod with the two Allisons. There is also several twin Griffon machines using them in the 7700... Floating Finish - the German Tractor Pulling Web Show and EU Live Streams: [www.youtube.com] |

We have MAN planetaries in stock and have been using them now for 2 years, have 4 LSS tractors running them and a TWD also with no problems yet. Nice setup, and we are working on a Billet Housing setup with wider gears internal for the new Light Unlimted Mod class, should be available soon. I am keeping sets in stock here in the USA for pullers needing backup parts too.

We have plenty of them on hand in our shop and will be making some housings shortly. We can also modify stock ones to make a bit more bolt on.
