john deere engine March 30, 2012 02:13PM
I bought a john deere 9500 combine engine and want to put it in a 4430. After i bought it,i was informed that some of the 9500 engines had a bigger timming gears and cover forcing it not to work to well in the tractor do to the hydro pump that has to bolt to the front. How do i know if i have the bigger gears and if i do, what can i do to fix the problem. Its for a farm class tractor and i'm new at this. Thanks

The bigger of the two covers, covers practically the whole front of the engine. The smaller one, covers just the gears.

If i have the bigger one how could i make it work. I have the 404 to exchange parts on.

The 404 cover will not work, if the gears are bigger. You should be able to cover the holes that you don't need, to keep the oil from coming out.

dont understand. can this big timing gears be installed and still run my hydro pump

Yes you can still use your hydraulic pump. I installed this same wide gear drive engine in a 4230. The 4230 is a lot shorter frame.
You just have to either make a new drive system or mix and match parts from other deere tractors to make it work.
I think I used the factory 9500 drive of off the dampner and used a drive coupler from a 4010 on the pump side.

Thank you for the info. Did you run a electric fan then.

Re: john deere engine April 01, 2012 04:12AM
At first I I had to run the stock fan or at the least a stock appearing due to an IDIOT president of the organization. As soon as they allowed electric
I fans I switched.

Re: john deere engine April 07, 2012 03:41PM
can the exhaust from the 404 work on that motor or should i use a different one

Re: john deere engine May 02, 2012 02:28PM
i ran the same set up but i used the 404 timing cover with a spacer made to make it fit the wide gears. had one made for $300. then used the 404 water pump and fan with a spacer for the pump. works good had no trouble with it. If you want one let me know
