Gypsum? like powdred drywall? adding dry dust like that would make the track so dam hard and dry. I own and excavating company and we use dry powder like lime or flyash for soil stablization to dry it out. There is a form of calcium cloride used for dust control for haul roads on job sites We have never used it we just use water. I am not sure how that would work since the dirt is constantly being worked up. My best suggestion is to have a water tank on the leveler that uses crop sprayer mist nozzels with some pointing before the scraper bars and then some after. The one before are needed to help keep the soil moist and keep the track consistant in the sun. This is one area I disagree on with some promoters they have no idea how to prepare or maintain a track. Some work and water the track so much bfore the pull everyone in the first class tries so hard to get to pull last in the class. Water may need to be applied more or les depending upon tempreature humdity sun and wind. There are variables to keeping proper track conditions but keeping the moisture level right is good for dust contol and maintaining a consistant track from front to back of class its only fair to the pullers.

I’m not an expert track builder by any means so take this for what it’s worth… (I was at one point in my life a Geologist that focused Groundwater and Soil contamination for whatever that’s worth)… From that and some feedback I’ve heard through some track builders… organic material can help hold water in soil. Organic clay will hold more water than inorganic clay. I’ve seen a few track builders add sawdust to a track with some pretty good success. In fact Bowling Green Ohio added saw dust to their track a few years ago with some pretty good results. I think it helped the track maintain much more consistent moisture content from the start of the session until the end.

Obviously the key is finding the right amount of organic material to add, as well as the right amount of water to add. Dry sawdust can soak up a great deal of moisture so it needs to be hydrated well in advance.

I think it's almost more important to know when to add the water to the track. I’ve seen promoters add a lot of water an hour before the event, and then wonder why it turns from a swamp on the top few inches into a dust bowl a few hours.

Just some food for thought, good luck.

I have seen some people using solar salt in the water mixture. Seems to help hold the moisture in tthe track very good. Also have heard of using dish soap, but have never seen it.

Probably the best organic product to add is mint. I have been involved in Motocross for 20 years and we have had the same problem with moisture and dust our local club have started to add mint waste from a few mint farmers to the track. It has worked out awsome. It holds the right amount of moisture in the ground and it is very hard for the sun to get it out but if it rains it will keep the track very workable. We ran into the same problem with watering the track between races or during races and we found that the mint does not need any watering even after a hot sunny day the moisture keeps coming up in even levels it would be something to look into and I think it would be just fine in a pull track I like Tomah with constant abuse and alot of sun and it would help the track dry out after the rain that always hits Tomah during the pulls.
