What is the difference between methanol and alcohol?

Is there any performance difference?

Thanks

There is no difference, methanol is alcohol. Well, it’s an alcohol (there are many, many different chemical formulas for alcohols), but as far as I know it’s the only legal alcohol to use in pulling.

Methanol is also known as methyl alcohol.

They have changed their terms of service and stated they would fine PayPal users for spreading "misinformation" and "hate, violence, racial or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory". PayPal did not provide definitions for some of these vague terms. Woke corporate policies regarding "misinformation" could result in an automatic fine of $2,500 which would have been removed directly from the customer’s PayPal account. PayPal did backdown from some of their policies but quietly implemented portions of them in later terms of service. A financial institute has no right to monitor social media accounts or speech. This is unacceptable and I'll no longer do business with PayPal.

Methanol makes more power and is more corrosive, ethanol is mixed with gasoline to become E-85. You don't see a mix greater than E-98, cause pure ethanol is "moonshine", Yehaw!!!

Re: Difference Between methanol and alcohol March 08, 2009 12:14PM
Ethanol will make just as much power when tuned properly. Just look at Mark Thomas in IHRA. Ethanol is less corrosive, and absorbs less water than methanol. You will need to increase the bypass pill because you use less ethanol than methanol since it does not evaporate as quickly. Ethanol is also cheaper than methanol. Since ethanol does not absorb as much water or evaporate as quickly, it is more consistent than methanol when there are weather changes. If you want to be different, and aren't afraid to experiment a little, try ethanol.

I hate to disagree, but it is imposible to make the same power on ethanol as methanol.  The difference in O2 alone makes this impossible.  Ethanol is aprox. 39% O2 compared to Methanol at aprox. 49% O2.  You may have a point about the consistency, but not the equal horsepower.  In the bracket drag racing world peak power is not as important as consistency therefor ethanol is a viable option.  I would not say that ethanol would not be a good option for tractor pulling because it is easier to tune than methanol but you can not make the same power.

Doubt Thomas ever ran Ethanol in IHRA competition, they only allow one brand maker of alcohol, as a spec fuel, let alone a totally different kind of alcohol! Now in matchrace trim he may have had ethanol on board. Kinda like NHRA had several Torco sponsored cars, but none of them were allowed to run Torco brand fuel at any NHRA event.

thanks for the info guys. Does the NTPA allow Ethanol or only Methanol?

Look at the bottom of this website. What is the difference between the last two fuels?

one says ALKY RACING ALCOHOL a nd the other just says Methanol. Are both these allowed in the NTPA (mod 4x4)

thanks

The ALKY is the same as the methanol listed below it except it already has top lube mixed in with it. I believe it is legal for NTPA. I don't think it is for NHRA drag racing though. When they perform fuel tests it needs to be pure.

ALKY RACING ALCOHOL is a brand for methanol that is now sold sold under the SUNOCO name. The only difference between it and plain methanol is the ALKY RACING ALCOHOL has a top end lube for the valves and seats already mixed in. Hope this helps.

when running alcohol do you need to add a lubricant
