How light can a 4640 Quad get down to? July 25, 2016 12:34PM
Looking around to buy a 4440 QR to make into a tractor for an 11K "Hot Farm" Class
to find a cheap base is pretty tough but seems like you can buy 4640s a lot cheaper and more available.
So I'm wondering if anyone has expierence putting a 4640 on a major diet and ridding it of rockshaft, cast wheels, chopping axles, ect
Another advantage I thought wouldbe an even stronger drivetrain
Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

About 5 yrs ago I bought a 4630 and wanted to do the same thing you are planning. It was QR with cab, I took all the easy stuff off (3point arms, sway blocks, hub duals and rock box) and it still crossed the scale at 14750. I estimated what I could get it down to and I came up with12500. There is soooo much difference between a 44 and 46. IMO you would never get a 4640 down to 11000. Now I have a 4430 that I run in 9500 and up. Hope this helps you, just sharing my own experience.

4640 is a different yet heavier rear/tranny than a 4440. 4440's are still in demand for the collector's. Our 4440 was a primary tractor and a great one.

I believe there is a 4640 in iowa pulling farm/too hot to farm, that is right close to 11,500.

I spoke to the 4640 I referred to previously. he said he can make 10500 with it currently empty.

I built a 4640 rear end tractor that can get down to 8500. It was a serious diet. Aluminum wheels, home made frame and front end, roll cage and lightened everything. Drivetrain is very strong though. Still has factory brakes though so it could still drop several hundred pounds if it needed to but it runs in a 10K class so no need, plenty of moveable weight now.
