Perkins 354/365 help August 22, 2016 03:15AM
Is there anyone around with experience of getting these motors to the 600+ hp range?
Looking to make a decision on how/where to spend money and don't want to start a loosing battle when there are other options.
Thanks

I've heard the 1006 Perkins (3056 Cat) is the place to start with because of the better flowing heads. That said, I haven't built or run one myself. Someday maybe. You might try Brad Maibach at Maibach Equipment in Creston Ohio. He may be able to help or point you in the right direction.

You could always just bolt a Sisu 7.4 or 8.4 in there. Way better head than the Perkins. Also comes factory with a P pump. And it will easily make that power range.

I'd love to run a Sisu and when we move to a pro farm or similar class that would work.

Our current class is 380 ci so that's where I'm stuck. Hahah

the engine can easily make that hp. that being said a dot 4 head or the 1000 ser. head is a must i know the dot 4 will fit block also you run an oliver 1850 block if the pistons were not changed it will not have a big enough bowl in piston for turbocharging you need to put dot 4 pistons in it custom injectors and set openin psi high to get fuel to atomize so you can make use of the fuel

Is the 1006 head much better than the dot 4 head. I've never had a chance to compare them.

So this is what I've found with research.

354.1 head < 354.4/1006 7-port heads < 1006 12-port head.

I dont have numbers to back it up yet, but I've been told that the 1006 12-port head flows almost twice as much as the 7-port head.

The 12-port heads came on everything 1997.5 model year and newer.

the 12 port head is a cross flow much better but u can port out a dot4 and make them flow alot of air. the dot one head just wont flow that much air

Thank you both for the additional information. I wasn't aware that early 1006 engines were nine port or how to easily tell the difference. Live and learn!

the 12 port head is not a cross flow head its still a uni flow head (manifolds on same side) but it does flow better than the 7 port head
