A lot of old modifieds had cockshutt of massey rear ends. How strong are they? How many HP can you run through them before the breakage gets too severe. I assume they were just using these with an auxillary transmission in front right?

Ralph Banter told me of all the old bull gear type tractor differentials, that the C**kshutt (Coop) were the strongest. He said the transmissions were weak, but that you could run up to 2 blown engines or 1 Allison when you would direct drive them into the ring and pinion. He said they'd hold up pretty well.
The secret was in the design of the bull pinions and bull gears. Most of the old tractors of that era only had the bull gears supported on the axle side and he bull pinions were only supported on the out side. C**kshutt used double bearings on both the bull pinions and bull gears. In other words, they both were supported on each side of the gears preventing gear deflection.
Of course the strongest way to go is with either and internal, or external planetary gear set. Massey's were no where near as strong, but plentiful. The Massey Harris 55's were definitely stronger by design than their 44's and smaller tractor transmissions and differentials.
