Wana build LLSS. Going to be alky. Pros and cons to ford ih and JD. Leaning towards Ford but need want to hear pros and cons. Any help??

IH has a lot of engine options along with several rear ends 560 656, 666 686,that can be bought cheap Fords make a nice tractor you can run the cummins in them if you wanted JD would cost the most to build with not much options for engines and a little bit of a weight problem If your not loyal to a certain brand anything Agco has a lot of options another easy option would be just buy mine and pull next week ive had cockshutts with the Hercules engines olivers with a cummins and cockshutt hoods on them and this IH with a 361 806 and now the dt 360 and have several other engines in the class in 3 or 4 different states if I can help give me a call .270 566 2901

A White with a de-cubed 3208 would be tough on everyone in the class.
If you go to pulls to make friends, do not do this! If you bring your own friends to the pulls, go ahead.

Build a 5 cylinder Deutz if you want something different that would run 320 cubes factory with no problem to get the 370 limit 3600 rpms factory in the truck on diesle just stick some spark plugs in it which wouldn't be that hard Deutz made some air cooled gas engines ; and the heads would probably fit

Cheaper to just buy a good one. Sometimes you can catch them for sale on here. Did Cut Loose ever sell? That's a sharp one that was up for sale a while

Whats considered cheap theres been several sell in the 50s and 60s . And Cut Loose was priced way up there to looks good yes but never was very impressive

06 rear ends are too heavy for LLSS. They can be made to work, but will require quite a bit of machining. 460, 560 rears are very popular. Tons of parts for them, and can be made very light. The 666 is also very popular. Tons of parts for it. For an alcohol Motor, the dt360 is your best bet. Similar dimensions to a 5.9 Cummins and a good amount of parts available including some crossover from the 466's. You can decube a 400 series, but in a lightweight class, the heavier motor is going to hurt you. The lighter you can build it, the more moveable weight you have to work with. It's easier to start with a lighter weight base, than to try and pare weight off of heavier parts. Cheaper as well.

360 wise...the truck block is a bore and stroke of 4.010x4.751 and can be found in many medium duty international trucks. The DTA 360 motors have the best flowing heads out of the box. The Ag 360 is a 3.88 x 5.09 bore and stroke and came in 766's I believe. There are a bunch of guys on here that are far more knowledgeable on tractor engines than I am, so hopefully one of them will chime in. I prefer the truck based block personally. Some guys like to open up the bore on an ag block and put the truck crank in, as it allows for a "combustion chamber" for alcohol motors. I actually prefer to use a deck plate on the truck block for the same purpose, but also to tie the top of the block together.

The Agg engines have a taller deck and a stronger crank and are double the price because of availability school busses are the best place they can be found and you can buy a complete engine cheaper than you can buy a good standard crank for the tractor engine I should be getting two busses soon that have good engines but they are plentiful

Yes, the taller deck block is where I was going with the Ag block and the truck crank but failed to mention the taller deck. Lewis came through on that and I'm glad he clarified what I forgot. But the taller deck block and shorter stroke crank from the truck motor will give you the "combustion chamber" I mentioned. As stated, I prefer to do it with a deck plate.

The rod journals between the two are different also. If i remember correctly the ag rods are 3.00" and the truck rods are 2.50". I think the mains are the same though.

The tractor uses the same rods as the 400 series engines and as far as the head flow the truck has a littile bit bigger valves because the tractor had the smaller bore and the truck has round ex ports instead of square ive ported a truck head that flowed 260 with stock size valves and don't think there would be a nickels worth of difference between the two heads the intake side looks the same if a round ex flows better the square could be rounded ,It would be interesting to se how the long stroke would run

Why hasn't some build an IH German? Go to around a 4.25" bore on a 310. They have a fully counter weighted crankshaft stock. The valves are stagered like a 5.9 Cummins, so it is easier to fit big valves. The head looks like it should flow as good or better than a 300 series. Just a thought.

IT has a 560 rear in it its just got the 806 sheet metal Iost 240 pounds changing from the 806 361 and going to the dt360 so its not a real 806 if that's what you were thinking but it weighs around 5100 without me and no weirghts

I worked at IH and owned a couple 666 and 686s with bothe engines the only bad wrap would have been the injecter pump and not starting as good as the 312 they were smoother running with less vibes than the 312
