JD 4430 clutch finger measurement April 15, 2017 01:47PM
Can some one tell me the measurement from the face of the clutch housing to to both of the throw out bearings? Is the a difference on serial numbers? Thanks

Measurements from a 4055, should be the same as a late 4430. 5 9/16 to the main clutch and 7 1/16 to the pto. From the bellhousing.

Early 4430's have a different main clutch dimension, not sure what it is.

What are you trying to do?

Serial Number is 175XX. Your numbers are close. Mine measures 5 5/16" on the trans. Just verifying the unit while it is apart. Thanks

I tested the traction throw out with low air pressure by applying it to the clutch pressure test port . Started at zero and slowly raised it. It did extend with about 50 psi +/- I believe it was.But I can hear a small air leak in behind the clutch piston assembly. Is some of the clutch oil bled off for lube purposes other than the lube circuit? Thanks

My 4430 tech manual doesn't say anything about a serial number break in the traction clutch setting. But it seems to me I remember some thing about different settings. But it's been 30 plus years. And what's the story concerning small and large pistons. I don't recall that.

4055: Can you give any more information on finger height? Local JD shop didn't give me any more information. Thanks

A perma clutch will likely not be successfully setup by fooling with finger heights. You need the proper tool which indexes off the cover plate and actually clamps the clutch with pressure like it was applied so you can set the fingers. There are 2 different pitons sizes used on 4430 depending on SN and the shims used on the tool are different. A perma clutch is not like a normal clutch since it is hydraulic appplied not release. The clutch has to be adjusted with it applied for it to work correctly.

My JD tech manual doesn't mention anything about serial number breaks and the local JD store wasn't any help. KTA can you clarify on the serial number break and tool selection? I worked on them back in the 80's. But time has its own delete button. My throw out bearing measures 5 5/16" from the housing surface. And 1 1/8" travel on the piston. Based on that the clutch I took out was on the boarder line of slipping. And I can't find any information on different piston sizes. Although I have heard of it.

Have them look on DTAC there is a solution talking about the different sn breaks and the correct "rings" to use on the adjusting tool

I'm not sure what you're going to do with this information unless you have a setup tool, but a 78-10 is .204" and 78-4 is .253"
