4230 pulling clutch October 12, 2017 01:12AM
Who makes a pulling clutch for a jd 4230? Will be used in a farm class with a 3lm or s300. Tractor is an 8 speed

You can modify your stock clutch to make it a 4 disk, possibly 5.if looking for Sfi approved call atlas or Joe bush ag repair, rursch sells them too for around $4500.

FYI the heavy HD hydraulic clutches (SFI approved), are very grabby (all in or out) from what we have seen.

Never had a problem with mine been pulling it for 20 years. Can slip it as much as you want.

What kind is yours? As jd diesel said, my stock style 4 disk is pretty well in or out, no slipping. Maybe I'm not making enough power yet out of the 404.

Very old Rursh 5 disk steel flywheel and pressure plate. SFI approved.

How do I modify the stock clutch to make it a 4 disk?

Not to rain on your parade but the 4 disk welded hub set up will have it limits and problems. Always loads on two disk first and will be high maintenance. The best option if you want to use stock parts is use a flywheel from a 4630 and cover plate from an 8430. This will give you one set of fingers to achieve even loading of disk and room for five disk. DW

Will the tractor still be able to be used around the farm? Dad just wants to have fun in a farm stock class but be able to use it if he needs.

Not the PTO as it will become live driven from clutch cover plate (No PTO clutch). You could use the traction clutch. If you go the welded hub route the PTO drive train would be connected to traction clutch.

I have a JD 4455 Mexican and would that 4630 flywheel and 8430 cover plate work for a farmers class and a 12mph puller if so what parts I would need to make it work.

Re: 4230 pulling clutch November 05, 2017 06:28AM
Yes it could be done. You would want flywheel from a 4640/8440 ?? Think they are the same??, This will give you the 6 bolt hole pattern to match 4455 crank flange bolt pattern. The 46/84 flywheel is taller than the 4455 and will compensate for the PTO spacer plate and original six finger cover you will discard from original Perma Clutch. This will also give you more room for extra traction clutch disks and plates. You will also need a taller center clutch hub from a 84/86 30/40 to add the extra dick and separator plates. Separator springs and spring guides from the same. Basically you will have an 84/8640 clutch with an extra disk when all said and done. Need to get the parts books out and study your lesson before you start buying parts. Transmission and PTO shaft splines are common which makes it all doable. The PTO clutch shaft of the 44555 will fit right into the rear cover spline of 4 wheel drive 3 finger plate. This will make the PTO drive train live. I left the PTO stub shaft in tractor as it acts as a carrier bearing fo clutch assembly. You can remove the large PTO drive gear below stub shaft and long PTO drive shaft if you desire or leave it in but it will be live to engine rotation. DW

wtw, you are making this all way too complicated. all this man needs to do is simple. put a rursch 5 disc set up in the tractor. weld the 2 drive hubs together, remove the lube reduction valve and plug the pto valve port. I am running close to 1000 horse and have had no problems with this particular set up. and it will still alow for use of the pto, it will just be "live" and only work with clutch pedal out. I have slipped this clutch up to 100 feet before without a single problem. I have not had clutch apart in over 75 hooks and 6 years. which in my opinion, is about 7 times better than any dry clutch life. the previous people in this post claimimg to have a jumpy clutch have either done the hydraulic plumbing wrong or have used a wal mart torque wrench to set the clutch fingers, and getting the clutch fingers adjusted proppperly is critical.

Perma clutches are old school. We were welding hubs 30 years ago and doing the same as you described. No big secret how to do them that way, Found the other worked much better for us but, both will have their limits. . If it works for you keep up the good work! We run a Crower now as there in no Perma clutch that will take 5000 rpm out of the hole with a 18 to 1 gear ratio. I know Darin and his father Don well and do our crower business with him today. Good guy to do business with!! DW
