5.9 Cummins with 3LM466 Turbo

Our class rules require the use of a "box stock" 3LM466 on our 5.9 Cummins with a rotary pump at 3000RPM. We are having a hard time spinning the turbo to get off the line and at the end of the run we go under the turbo. We also are running high exhaust temperatures. It is my belief that this turbo is not a good match for this class and I do not believe my competitors are actually using this turbo.
Any comments on the use of the 3LM466 turbo in this application? Thanks Rich |

Get with your class Tech. official to see if you can run a smaller exhaust housing , |

I am going to push for limits based on inlet and exhaust outlet size, not stuck to one turbo.

Im on the outside looking in..................... your statement "you dont think your competitors are using this turbo" hmmmmmmm heres my take others PROBABLY have more cubic in thus that turbo DOES in fact work for them as is. You however are behind on cubes therefore the housing is too big = slow turbo speed = high exhaust temps= no lug falling under the charger at the end. |

Unless they are specifically requiring that you must use a particular Borg Warner part number, you can buy "Out of the Box" 3lm turbos with different part numbers for different applications that will outperform other "Out of the Box" turbos with different part numbers. I know this to be true because we have 3 different untouched 3lms that perform at 3 different levels. All depends on the application. They have different 3lms for many different applications. So if they dont list a specific part number, do a little research or talk to your local Borg Warner dealer to help you choose one that is right for your cubic inches and application. Good luck! |

Which exhaust housing do you have? If it’s the 241, you could drop to a 231 but it may require machining |

What are you considering high exhaust temps? If you are allowed water inj. you should run some water to help with temps and to drive the turbo harder. Which will help you and make more power. Just a suggestion not knowing more details. |
