how big are some engines January 27, 2020 03:04AM
I was driving down the road yesterday and saw a cat payloader that was huge. The motor compartment seemed as big as a house and this got me thinking. How big of power plant do some different rigs run. We are used to the 466, 414, 619 and now the 903. Anyone know the sizes of different stuff out there?

Basically - when it goes up to ships -they are basically beyond imagination.
A company that builds engines for the segment, basically above what you find in your common tractor or semi, is MTU (used to be Maybach - Tiger Tank etc. - now a part of Rolls Royce)
They are mostly known to do engines for tanks, trains, generators, ships and the like but have also done and do engines for forage harvesters, tractors, construction equipment, etc.

Quite interesting:

The biggest one I found there is 212,000 cui

EMD diesel locomotive engines are rated like Detroit Diesel engines used to be in cubic inches per cylinder. Most of the common EMD SD70 series locomotives are 710ci per cylinder in 16 cylinders. Thats 11,360ci.

General Electric GEVO-12 diesel engines commonly found in modern GE locomotives are 12 cylinders and 11,405ci.
