Has anyone decubed a 404 to 370 for llss or is a person better off just getting a 362? Would be bolted into a 4010 so don't really want to use the adapter plate and 359. This is just a budget llss mostly for local pulls so not looking to turn 1200 hp lol

Re: Alky jd May 26, 2020 03:40AM
Only problem with 362 is they are only 4 main bearing bottom end vs 7 on diesel blocks. If girdled they may be durable - I've never tried. Short stroke would turn high rpm though.....

Re: Alky jd May 26, 2020 05:16AM
Assuming your tractor is in the picture is that a decubed motor?

Re: Alky jd May 26, 2020 06:24AM
Yes that's the tractor pictured. Not a decube. I ran a unique setup here in Ontario for about 12 years that was turbocharged gas (race fuel), draw through carburetor system (before turbo). Rule at the time was not to exceed 400 ci and no decubing (is now a 410 ci class). It was an original 4010 diesel block that was factory at 380 ci......we bumped it to about 393. It was a cheap way to get involved and was competitive until the last couple years where durability got me.

Currently switching to diesel power plant under the 410 ci rule.

Farmersfun, you you’re going to the 404 turbo style engine like in a 4430? Open rpm? What turbo are you limited to?

Re: Alky jd May 27, 2020 07:15AM
I am going 404, open rpm, max 2.6" (66mm) turbo at this time. I pull in classes from 6500 to 7500.

It's no secret making a 6000 class with 404/466 block is tough with a Deere. As Lewis mentioned further down on the thread here, using the 329/359 is a better option for weight. I haven't ever used them as yet. Scott Beckett (Beckett Machine) in Ohio could probably point you in the right direction with that.

While de-cubing the 404 to 370 is possible through either de-stroking (not a fan of shortening stroke) or custom sleeves with smaller bore pistons, you still have the weight of the block to deal with vs 300 series.

There is no "kit" available for 404 to 370. You would have to figure out what you want. That being said, the original 380 diesel was 4.125" bore and 4.75" stroke.........backing up to 4.065" bore (new sleeves and pistons) would have you right at 370.

Re: Alky jd May 27, 2020 09:40AM
Are you going to run the s300 style turbo?

Re: Alky jd May 28, 2020 06:16AM
That's the plan.

Re: Alky jd May 31, 2020 03:28AM
is The 404 going to have lots of custom parts or basically a reworked head and cam regrind? You can send me a pm if you want farmersfun.

Where would one get 300 series motor parts i see 400 series motor parts are a dime a dozen

Re: Alky jd July 14, 2020 02:22PM
A combine junkyard or down south from cotton pickers

Re: Alky jd July 18, 2020 06:46AM
If you mean performance parts, there isn't much. There are several pulling though, so they can probably help you out

Re: Alky jd May 26, 2020 08:34AM
Do they make a kit to take 404 to 370?

Re: Alky jd May 26, 2020 02:31PM
You will have to de stroke or go with a smaller bore a jd would not be a good choice for a budget tractor it will take a couple thousand just to get the engine down to size and a lot of extra work getting the tractor light the 359 would be the budget engine to build

Re: Alky jd May 27, 2020 12:24PM
I am doing the same. Deere is gonna be costly as the others have said and weight will be an issue.

I started collecting 400 series parts and switched to 300 series. It is still costly. Mine will be a bit of a bastard child. Feel free to reach out if you have questions.

Re: Alky jd May 28, 2020 02:51PM
What does it take to get the 359 into a 4010 rear end?? I assume an adaptor plate or something and what does that cost....

Re: Alky jd May 30, 2020 02:03PM
There is a stock adapter plate that can be had. I also know that Jason Koepke (Southern Valley Ag on Facebook) has made a billet adapter plate. He also has girdles and deck plates (if needed).

Re: Alky jd May 28, 2020 11:58PM
Anyone ever use the gas block. I would think.with limited turbo 4 mains would hold up? Thoughts!!!!

Re: Alky jd May 29, 2020 05:52AM
I have some experience with the 341 used in the early 4020 and 105 combine. You definately want to girdle it and I wound up tying the girdle to the top part of the block after cracking one 3/4 of the way around. The extra mains also provide more material connecting the pan rail to the top of the block. I didn't find the 362 to be readily available, so I can't say if that block is stronger.

I talked with one of the Bewley's from KY at DuQuion and again at Gordyville, he tried the gasser and gave up too.

I haven't done it yet, but my understanding is that you need the rear engine plate from a 4030 or a 4050 to bolt the 300 series engine to a 400 series bell housing. On a LLSS, everything forward of that is custom built, so that should be all you need.

As mentioned, the 404 is heavier so this depends somewhat on where you are pulling and the weight, but the 4 3/4" stroke of the 404 may be desirable. The 4010 gas came with a 4" bore, so stock valve size in the gas head would clear in a 370.

If anyone wants to try the gasser block I have some parts and am willing to share what I have learned.

Mark

I have a set of aluminium rods for the 404 and set of pistons

Re: Alky jd July 16, 2020 02:50AM
Lewis Conner please email me about the rods and pistons please I may be interested

Re: Alky jd July 16, 2020 08:10AM
You will have to text or call rods are 91/2 inches long made by earps machine stock journal 404 checked and redy to go 270 566 2901
