This has been discussed on here before I think
Does a JD 414 use a hopped up 404 block or a sleeved down 466 block. This engine is out of a combine I think but it has a small rotary pump

It uses neither. It is based off of the 329/359 series engine. Basically it’s a 359 with a longer stroke. It’s really a 300 series engine. Different animal altogether.

So a guy is better off sleeving down a 466 or finding one from a newer tractor(7410 for example)

What class rules are you trying to build for?

8500 lbs,414cid,3' charger, open rpm with P pump, 24.5 tire

You could put 4.3" pistons in a 404 or a 466 block and be 413.87 cui. And still put a 7.6L head on it. That way you can still use the readily available parts. You will want to use billet pistons and steel sleeves anyway.

Re: Jd 414 December 18, 2020 02:26PM
I think it depends upon you (green boy), your skills and resources. The 414 does not have a ready supply of performance parts you can order or pick up used. However, the head design of the 414 may work better if you want to go with a 5” stroke. If you want to be different and are able and willing, go for the 414. If you are not in a position to be a trailblazer go with the SB as bonestock described.

Umm, 414, is a Dubuque small block. Same as the small modern ag 3 & 4 (219, 259) cylinders plus 6 cylinder 329, 359 & 414.
404, 466 & 8.1 Waterloo engines are not a small block. They are the middle motors, between the small block and the big block 531 / 619.

I do not understand why people want to keep calling the mid series a small block.
That is as bad as National Weather Service Watch / Warning, as there description of the 2 terms is exactly opposite of the dictionary definition.

Based on popularity the 404/466/7.6/8.1 has, in the pulling world, always been referred to SBJD.

While I see your point, there are damn few Dubuque small blocks hitting the popular classes of pulling.

Just the way it is.
