Can you lighten a 706 rear end to run a llss class. Frame is 2" 120 Dom tubing, tube front axle. Can I get the rear end light enough with out drilling it out all over.

It can be lightened to make 6000 but it takes about 10k in machine work

I think that you could drill out the rear end to get it down to weight but I don't think you are going to be able to get that light if you are not going to drill it out. I know ours is drilled out and down to weighing 6000 but we also have a lot of unnecessary weight that we leave on because we run an 8500 lb class. Ours looks like swiss cheese and without that I dont think your going to be able to get down that light.

Didnt dibbles,itty bitty binder,use a 706 rear with a DVD 550 v8 block,cast heads too,in the early 90s,and hook in 5500 lbs ?? With 30.5 bf's too

Yes Ted's tractor did run the 5500 . Still had a cast motor adapter plate and solid axles also . Bulls were lightened , web above the PTO area was cut out . Had alot of aluminum pieces built , foamed rear. Only had direct in the transmission ,( never a mistake running the wrong gear ) low range was still in place. Tires were BFGs

It would have had to be Swiss cheesed. Also no roll cage. Getting to 6k is a lot of material removal.

Ted still had the stock transmission housing . The rear was drilled some , but I've seen plenty of them with more holes . Every weight bracket came off for the 5500 except a small piece on the front end with enough room for 4 weights. For a while the starter and ring gear was removeable with remote battery , only had enough battery on the tractor for ignition.

It can be done. I know of 2 that run with ISP light supers at 6000 with multiple chargers. Ulmers might even have one ready to go. But I think 666 or 656 would be easier and less expensive to do.

Probably two of the lightest 706 housing tractors in the country were the Ulmer's out of South Dakota.

4 charger diesel with 10 ply tires and 800+ lbs moveable weight at 6300 lbs. 3 charger alcohol with 10 ply tires and 800+ lbs moveable weight at 6000 lbs.

Ulmer's rides are definitely light, and they definitely know 706 rears. I talked to Allen a few years back, and he was not only extremely knowledgeable but also very friendly and happy to help people that ask. Keep in mind that their 706 based tractors run, what I'll call, an exo-skeleton tube frame that goes beyond the axle. The hitch attaches to the frame extension, as there is not enough meat left in the housing to attach the hitch to. I think I have pics stored somewhere, and that is directly from Allen. Again, he is a wealth of knowledge, if you can get him on the phone. He's a busy man, especially with snow not that far away.

While I respect what Ulmers have accomplished in their careers thus far, and the fact they have built some of the lightest tractors in a given class to be sure, the fact that an entire "exoskeleton" frame is required because the cast is thinned and lightened to the breaking point is precisely why a component style tractor makes more and more sense everyday. To me, this is for sure a safety concern......matter of time before something lets go and you just hope that things are designed to support what's left well enough to avoid a catastrophe. Excessive lightening of cast is very risky. The fact that Ulmers have done it and have ran it for some period of time is all well and good, but remember that each individual will have a different interpretation of what is the right amount to remove and from what location. Also the engineering that goes into supporting what's left is equally important. This to me is kind of like playing Russian roulette.

If you have to support what cast you have left with another entire set of frame work front to back including the hitch, what is the point of mandating the use of OE cast housings? I'm not trying to say they have done something wrong, but just think about what the goal was. Ya I'm sure many will say it's all about innovation and rising to a challenge and such. I get that, but when you have these castings present "just because", it isn't making much sense any more. I'm sure that for more years than anyone cares to know we have had component style parts inside the housings of all kinds of tractors that are "just there" to keep the internals working together. Seems like a lot of time, money and effort to create risk.

Yes it can be done I have one that weighs 4650# bare aluminum rails, 24.5 tires. Pulls in ISP 5000 pro field class.
