How is a "Points Scratch" different from a "Scratch"?

Wondering about Tim Cain on the second night in Tennesse.

Tim hooked Friday night, he made a heck of a pass but broke at the very end. The sled was reset and he was no longer able to compete, so he was hooked/broke. Since Chapel Hill is a 2 hook event he still got points for Saturday since he made the trip there even though he was no longer able to compete. So he gets points even though he was scratched from competition that night.
