Experimental pulling vehicles

If someone built an EV pulling vehicle, what is the maximum performance level? Lets say they can weigh 10,000 lbs, and have to conform to NTPA rules regarding safety, dimensions, etc?
I suspect an EV pulling vehicle's batteries would drain quickly, or the tech is not there to out pull a single charger diesel tractor weighing 4000 lbs less, but am truly unsure of just how much power an EV could make. Given how heavy a battery pack is for a passenger vehicle, I'd suspect even at 10k lbs, the amount of batteries would be limited. |

The torque created by batteries is substantial. However, you are spot on with the weight. For example the new GMC Sierra EV version weighs just under 9000 pounds and that's the half ton truck. I can't see a half ton electric truck outpulling a 6000 pound light super with 2-3 turbos. Hell would it even outpull a twd truck?
Keep electric vehicles away from our sport. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/24/2025 06:08AM by BrandonA. |

Too late, its already been done. Back when I pulled garden tractors there was a guy that pulled an Electrack, not sure of the spelling, garden tractor. And that was early 70's. |

I'm all for folks trying something, but when it comes to the safety aspect, battery pack fires are nearly impossible to put out. I dislike that part of very much. Other than that, I am not a hater on the idea.

Just 3 weeks ago i watched a electric 1450 outlaw tractor pull that was interesting it had a fork lift motor and 4 batterys wired in a series pretty impressive Julian stall had a battery powered garden tractor |

Yep

I would think that if EVs were allowed EFI should be allowed as well. |

Not the same, but similar.
There are some EV cars on the drag strip that are very impressive. |

Related question: Should EVs be allowed in a mod class if they can come up with a set of rules? |

If ev is allowed then alky should be in superfamily AND prostock |

Even if they worked, I would think there would have to be a whole new class just for electric. The amount of trial and error that would have to be done also would be years worth. |

I don't know....at PRI last year, there were a couple of rail dragsters on display that had been down the track. |

Right. Those are race cars, not pulling tractors |

You'd only need enough battery for about 20-30 seconds (staging and making a pass). I'd probably double or triple that incase there's a pulloff. I'm guessing the battery size could be much smaller than needed for a 200-300 mile range vehicle.
Our senses matter in this motorsport, sound and the feeling in your chest are a very important part of pulling (just like drag racing). If you took those two things away it would be like watching muted pulling videos online. Not nearly as exciting. There would be other hiccups to consider: How do we charge the EV? Do teams use a generator at two day events? Or does the event need to provide EV charging stations? If it's just a big diesel generator to recharge an EV wouldn't it just be a giant virtual signal (isn't that what they really are anyways?). Do the demographics of our motorsport need to virtual signal? Some electric stuff is pretty cool... I'd love to build an EV GoCart or EV ATV just to keep things quiet for my neighbors... but a pulling vehicle? I guess for the electrical tinkerer it might be cool. Honestly I hope it's never a mainstream part of this motorsport. Jake Morgan Owner, PULLOFF.COM Independent Pulling News This page is a free service. The cost is covered out of my pocket. Stahl's aka Midwest Super Cub had a electric garden tractor they built 10 or 15 years ago. It ran pretty hard.
Like Jake said not sure you would need the huge battery pack on a puller. They are so big in the cars and heavy trucks because of distance and time not because of power needed to get it moving. I don't think you'd need huge battery packs for a 330 foot pull. I also don't think it would take as long as you think to charge them, and a generator with the correct charging station in the hauler would do it. The research I have done for work you can charge a depleted truck in an hour or 2 with the correct charger so its pretty quick and that is a huge battery bank. Plugged into a wall outlet, if it is set up for that, it is over night charging. |
