Observation about motorsports trend

Last weekend, the Fremont, MI RN pull had 5 sanctioned classes with a combined 23 entries.
Meanwhile, one complaint in the short track racing world is the bad habit (I would say death spiral) of promoters fighting dwindling car counts by adding classes. Instead of running 3 or 4 classes with enough vehicles for 3-4 heats, B Main and Feature, some tracks have as many as 10 divisions or more, but with few cars per class, maybe 1 heat with everone, then a feature. We're not to the point of having 10 classes at a RN pull, but if NTPA state or regional pulling continues having low turnouts, in order to have a show more classes will need to be added... with small numbers in each class. I was surprised to see TWD with so many possible vehicles yet only 3 came. |

Farm commodity prices are way down, we've probly been in a recession for a year or more. Doesn't help with the upcoming "stare at your phone" generation not interested in attending events, or eventually getting into the sport! |

County fairs book 30 hook show for good price. Hats off to Paulding County Fair for two Tractor, two truck and a Modified class. Better numbers than last year. Made 4 hooks then rain out. Enthusiasm for next year is high. |

I agree, class numbers are down overall. But low puller turnout doesn't mean a bad show. I have to an event that was done in just over 2.5 hours an it was a great show. You do the best show with what you have. |

Might be a 5 or 6 class show that yield that 30 total.
I announce some regional NTPA events and many "Fair goers" like the two Tractor, 2 truck, mod lineup. Most folks are not pulling fans or rodeo or demo derby fans. However they support the fair or get to see the cool think at the fair. Well paced event less than 3 hours is great entertainment. The ticket prices are BELOW scale for almost any form of public entertainment event. $5 beer in Tomah? People who complain probably don't get out much. Low class numbers is always an issue on every level of Pulling. Bet some class numbers might just rise next year. |

Some of these mixed events, with a huge portion of local farm&truck classes and at most 1/3 or less of high power classes ran into kinda inner conflict. They tried several arrangements in the schedule order which class after what, ending up in the situation that many of the heavier classes in the beginning of the event killed the track and made it impossible to utilize e.g. light mod, supers or even mini mod at the end of the event. |

I think the solution on the promoter side is to run a co-sanctioned event. Run some regional classes for the "quality" side of things and book a local class or two from a local club to add the "quantity". As a fan, I would just ask that the feature classes not be shown last in front of a half empty grandstand. |

This seems like a great idea on the surface, but ask yourself who wants to pull in front of a half empty grand stand? This is a no win situation for any class - no matter what. The debate about how to handle this will likely rage on forever...... |

Don't NTPA rules say NTPA classes run first? Also, NTPA signage and sponsors need removed for non-sanctioned classes. |

True, but from my point of view, the number of fans left in the seats may still be a decent sized crowd to a lot of the smaller organization pullers. And the venue may be someplace those guys would like to pull at. I doubt that anybody enjoys waiting until late at night to finally get to pull. I just don't know why it always has to be the featured classes. And most of the pulls I'm referring to our Outlaw shows. I don't make a lot of NTPA pulls anymore. |
