The 5.0 PS class

I had high hopes for the growth of the class, not so sure now of the future of the class. I was hoping for more 4.1 and even SF to make that jump, however I have not the numbers that are encouraging. Is the component that allowed in the class slowing growth, the economy, not sure what it is. I realize that the Outlaws are pretty solid with numbers, I hope that will encourage others build. I think 2026 (and from there on) you will see a nice jump--several are waiting on component chassis, engine parts, etc there are many 4.1 and SF switching and will be out next summer--also as you stated the economy--been to several places where there was 1/2 of the normal entries in 86 Lim Pro and the 4.1s also.... |

If everyone showed up Outlaws can put around (20) 5.0 Pro's on the track..As already mentioned I think that you will see more 5.0's coming out in 2026-2027.. |

There are a couple broke in the last week that will be back next week in R2. And there are a least 2 more in the works that should have been done but supplier's are not having much luck getting things done.
It's a nice and a fun class to participate in with a bunch of good guys. Hope we can get a few more in the future. Also life happens and I personally have a few other commitments that fall on pull days as well and I know I'm not the only 1 like that. |

I'm just asking, please don't, anyone, take offense.
What is the purpose of the 5.0 PS class? Wouldn't this just be the PS class from 5-10 years ago? Much the same way, the 4.1 is the 10-15 year old PS class? What am I missing? |

Doug Roberts came up with the 5.0 PS class about 10? years ago to help reduce costs some...Its worked out pretty good for the Outlaws..They always have 8-12 tractors and even more at places like Wisner,NE....A sealed Wimer 5 inch box turbo is used plus they run no cooler..The Outlaw 5.0's probably make 1200-1500? horses less than the big turbo NTPA and PPL Pro's but you would never know it when they come down the track in their separate classes..Put them together and I'm sure the big turbo tractors would put 20-30 ft plus on the 5.0's...This is just a guess from a spectator..I wish a 5.0 puller would comment.. I love the 4.1 class but if I had to choose between watching a 4.1 or 5.0 class I'll pick the 5.0 class every time..You can sure tell the difference in the horsepower...I think the 5.0 class will have staying power west of the Mississippi where east of the Mississippi it may never totally catch on..Time will tell..Yes,there are several big turbo Pro tractors west of the Mississippi and they go east to play..Shrameks,Mettings,Link,Maize,Miller are some of them.. |

Just my opinion the 5.0 class seems to be offered in a very small area. The only draw for pullers is it is a smaller jump up from 4.1 but you need a new chassis and 4.1 has unlimited places to go to pull. It makes a smaller drop from the "big pros" for the guys that can't afford or don't want to afford them anymore. You don't need to build a new chassis or motor platform to run it just a different turbo. But at that platform with fewer places to pull why drop back? It is just another single turbo class in an already diluted extremely expensive sport offered in a limited area.
We have to recognize what works in one area doesn't always work in another. How many more classes are we going to dream up to "help" the sport? the average fan can't tell the difference between a hot farm and a pro stock. |

You nailed it, the number of classes reduces the number of vehicles per class. Less classes actually helps the sport not hurt it. Dick Morgan www.PULLOFF.com Independent Pulling News |

Re: The 5.0 PS class

all good points! biggest advantage to 5.0 over 4.1 is you're not getting 1-2 calls a year about the newest latest turbo update that you just have to have (and then hoping this update won't "pop" going down the track)--also working on a component chassis vs cast iron one is so much easier (and reliable) |

Some places run light and 4.1 together.
How much extra weight would a 4.1 need to run even with a 5.0? |

Super farm, light Pro's, 4.1s, 5.0, and big pro's.....are they all necessary? I'd say no at least two of them should be eliminated.
To me the 5.0 is not necessary at all. Either run 4.1 or jump to the big pro. I find it interesting that The Lawyer family had two tractors that they planned to run 5.0 with this year and then switched them back to big pro's. I don't have anything against the class they put on a good show I just don't see the point of them. |

It would be nice for the 5” class to go to Brandenburg…Napoleon…Wellington ….and let the big pros rest a little. |

Then take them to the car show and parades. What happened to building tractors to pull. Letting the tractor rest sounds pathetic. |

Why do you think the pros have constantly the most hooks per season? Why don’t the Unlimiteds have more hooks? Or the DSS?? |

The big pros have proven to be built well enough to pull every weekend. Sure there is some breakage but for the most part these tractors are able to make it all season without catastrophic damage. The only big damage I can think of so far this season is Young Blood lost a crank shaft early in the year and it appears Injected Funds had major damage in Rockwell. Guess we'll see this weekend but I bet injected funds will be back in Napoleon. The big pros are not the Super Stock Diesel class. Let them run. |

When you start to look at state results you will see that the PS tractors make a lot of start/regional events. That takes commitment from the drivers and obviously the PS are hooking several times a year other than national events. Dick Morgan www.PULLOFF.com Independent Pulling News |

Only in Ohio and Badger State, and even there the overlap is few tractors. No state other than Ohio and BSTP runs big pros. |

In the ITPA(Illinois), the majority in the Pro Stock class decided that they were tired of breakage and buying new turbos every other year. At that point they were averaging maybe 4 tractors at each hook. This year they have averaged 8 after officially moving to the 5.0 box turbo/no coolers.
We have a strong 8500 LimPro class as well as a healthy 4.1 class. There are nights where there are 2(sometimes 3) events, so the number of classes are needed. I dont disagree with the fact that there are too many classes. Do we need every state to have their own "sandbox" to play in? No, it definitely helps to have surrounding states with similar rules. The hard part is eliminating a class without pushing the participants away from the organization. I do believe that there should be "state" level classes with good limits to give the most opportunity for numbers at that level. |

A puller once told me, "3 classes of 10 tractors will always put on a better show than 10 classes of 3 tractors." We keep adding new classes. Are we sabotaging ourselves? I was on board with turbo limits in the ProStock class. But another ProStock class? And then the promotional side of it. How do you sell this to a promoter? If they look and run like a ProStock, why have them? I understand the differences, but the average fan doesn't. |

" I understand the differences, but the average fan doesn't." Avercusauto, are you sure about that? A good announcer (which are few & far between) should know and relate what the class basic specs are (engine size, turbo size, tractor weight, tire size). I have been very involved in the pulling sport for 60 years. Thus I know all those differences. I have no problem with all the classes we have today. Far more interesting then the early days when all we had was SS and Mod, where many of the tractors would pull in 2 or 3 of the 4 weight classes and then all those ridiculous time consuming pull offs!! So we get to see far more tractors today than we did back then.
The Lgt PS, then later 4.1 and then even later the 5.0 PS's, were created for the predominantly SF guys that wanted more power yet they did not want to jump into the expensive full-fledged PS class (remember, that started as an economy introduction class - yet look at where they are $$$ investment wise today), which overall PS predominately supported the GN/CT circuit whereas the 'smaller' PS's were initially limited to State/Region circuit, which I'm fine with. All 3 of those smaller 'limited' PS classes showcase a really good show. But they are just like all the pulling classes in that they also are expensive to build to and then maintain. How many more 5.0's are coming in the future? I know of 1 currently being built in Region 2, not far from where Bonestock lives. But this grain farm economy is once again getting very serious financially. That alone just may really put a (big) damper upon what we see out on the future pulling tracks, regardless of pulling vehicle class. And how long with the 'big swingers' continue to be willing to sling out a $2500 entry fee per tractor per event?? |

lil history, you have been a fan for 60 years. Of course you can tell the difference. I don't have that many years under my belt but I have quite a few. Walk through the pits and take the drivers/tractors names off and I couldn't tell you the difference in classes. Run an event with Sf, light pro, limited pro, pro stock and the average fan/local fan couldn't tell you the difference. Other than sound (r.p.m.) and where the smoke stack is mounted they all basically look the same going down the track.
The last pull I was at I was sitting next to some first timers. They were in awe over what they were seeing (light supers) by the time the second and third class Light pro and super farm ran they left because they got bored of "the same tractors" pulling over and over, they weren't as fast and crazy as the light supers. I tried explaining the difference and they could care less about turbo size and cubic inch limit, to them they looked the same. Too bad they left half way through the super farm, the minis ran after them. |

I've been attending pulls all over the country for 20 years and I leave (for the food/restroom/pits) when the superfarms run too, I dont blame them lmao |

The 5.0 class looks to be the pro stock class of the future in the Midwest. Nashville had 13 and Unionville,MO had a good turn out as well. Ppl’s big pro class has all but disappeared this year |
