I'm to young to have been there, but always hear about how fun it was. That's one of the places Dad was always happy to do good at.

Brian was your dad and dick there in 72? Wonder if the larry white that placed in mod class is the same one we know?I'm like you would have been something to see 18 to 24 tractors per class. Always hear stories about the good ol days in bethany.Wish someone had full results to see how many local guys were there and how they placed.Wonder if mack was there in 5000 class?

I do have a complete list of everyone that pulled at Bethany in 1972 except for a couple of names that I didnt get. In fact I have the complete results until 1980 if I can find them. Larry White was from Winfield,Iowa.I dont think a Quick was there in 1972.

I have a bunch of pictures from several years of bethany pulls but don't have a way to scan them. My mother was knocked out by a lid blown from a concession stand when the storm came through. Great pulling back then. Give more results, I like this stuff much better than all the bashing that goes on here. Doyle

I can't remember if they had started by 72 yet or not. I know they were pulling 74.

I attended the 1971 Western National at Bethany - I still have the Program. There were two pulls I remember very well. The Cajun Queen, which I believe was a Deere 4010 and it was scary powerful in the 7000 lb Class. As I recall, there was an 8 MPH speed limit, but the Cajun Queen could seemingly throttle down to stay below the speed limit at then throttle up as the sled pulled harder and have all the power needed to finish in First Place....WOW! All the other tractors were full throttle just to keep their momentum. The 2nd pull was the 12,000 lb Open Class....an Allison V12 powered hot rod setup the first place distance, but then an N. D. Harrison's Allis Chalmers 220 from Pittsfield, IL pulled last...the 220 was pulling strong and he followed the exact same track left by the Allison...and finished about 2 feet longer for 1st place...the crowd went wild! Those were Golden Days of Pulling!

I remember the bethany pull well and attended all of them, they definatly had a good thing going.I don't remember what year it was but everyone was required to join the NTPA for a fee of $5.00 I beleive it was for insurance and they placed a sticker on the tractor's.I really don't know why it stopped other than I think it was a fair board thing. It was good for the town and the whole area,it would be a wonderful location to bring a high caliber pull back to all they have now is a twin stated pull during the fair Macon, Jefferson City and Wheatland are the premium shows now in Missouri.

if memory serves correctly, there was a guy by the name of Jim Lowe who pulled a oliver 88 from missouri. i have a picture from indy super pull when that tractor broke in half. is this man still around???

If memory serves me right the 88 Oliver you are talking about was from Liberty,North Carolina. There was never a Lowe in MO that pulled a 88 Oliver.I have been around MO pulling for many years.

Some of the Oliver pullers in MO from the early 1970's are the following.

77 Oliver Buddy Morris-Lockwood
77 Oliver David Gilmore -Ashland
88 Oliver Arlie Mitchell - Pleasant Hill
88 Oliver Grant Busby -Spickard
88 Oliver Bobbie Gilmore -Ashland
88 Oliver John Frame -Bethany
880 Oliver Basil Gore -Vandalia
880 Oliver Walter Luhrman -Higginsville
1650 Oliver Verl Stephens -Bethany
1650 Oliver Dean Gentry -Kingston
1650 Oliver Ben Creason -Purdin
2150 Oliver Bill Selby -Ridgeway (Does anyone have a picture?)

To my knowledge only the Gilmores are still pulling after 40 years.

I remember Rustys red rocket and the Power Without smoke G1000s .besides the Cajun Queen.

Re: Red Rocket memories May 13, 2012 01:11AM
I grew up in the Bethany area and have fond memories of the pulls. We were farming a piece of ground by Coffey. MO that had a dirt road on the end of the field that Rusty had to use to get to his field. Timeframe 1968 to1970. I was chiseling bean ground with a 3020 gas tractor tied on to a 12" DMI chisel-diggin scratching and running all of maybe 3 mph. Rusty came through with the Red Rocket with a 12' twisted shovel ripper--waved, smiled and drove through and went to work in his field. All you could see is black smoke coming up from over the trees in the fence row that separated the fields. At noon when Rusty was leaving to go drive the tractor back to Coffey to eat lunch instead of just driving by he pulled over in the edge of the field and dropped the chisel in. Black smoke started rolling, dirt started flying and off across the end of our field he went---running like 12mph. Laughing and grinning all he way across. Let me tell you he left 2 ft ridges for me to cross all day and I bet he is still laughing about that. I still have a video of that in my mind and I wish I had it on tape.
