Ron Perry-Solid Junk G-1000 At Bethany,MO In 1971 Plus Blown F-30 January 02, 2010 08:59AM

Not a real great picture that I took at the 1971 Bethany,MO NTPA Western Nationals.Ron Perry from Bringhurst,Indiana on the Solid Junk G-1000 MM.I really dont think it was called Solid Junk yet and Dave Stangle wasnt part of the team at this time.Is Ron Perry still around?

Boy,was there ever a crowd there! SRO and this is a big grandstand. Was anyone on here at Bethany in 1971?

The thing that I remember most was Claude Woodworth from Ursa,Illinois pulling his F-30 blown 427 Chevy in the 12,000 Unlimited and getting 2nd place. There must have been 60-70 weights hanging on the tractor and the automatic tranny was probably toast when he spun out.It normally was a 5000 or 7000 Mod and was possibly the first blower motor tractor ever. I have a picture of the 12 Unlimited run at Bethany somewhere but its so dark you can barely see it.

BG, Thanks for all of the good old days pics.. really enjoying them. I believe you are correct about Claude Woodworth having one of the first mods with a blower on it. Another that comes to mind was Joe Tichler[sp] out of KY. I remember seeing a photo of it from l.ville many yrs ago.

Thanks again, Stacy Butson

Your right, Claudie had one of, if not the first, blower motor. Marvin Musick from Augusta, Il. was right there at about the same time. They pulled together for sevearal years, used the same engine builder, Lee Hamilton, out of Quincy. I got to go with them to several pulls as a 12 or 13 year old kid. Claudie lives in Chillicothe,Mo. now and builds trailers, and Musick farms pretty big around Augusta.

I haven't heard Marvin Musick's name for a while. Didn't he pull a 4020 with a 318 Detroit in the late 60's or early 70's?

Musick pulled an M Farmall Mod with a 427 Chevy that turned some serious rpm's.I have a picture of it somewheres.

On another note that picture of Lloyd Wewils UB MM pulling the jeep on the sled had to be taken at Pleasant Hill,Ill.Do they still have pulls there?I know that Sonny McKinnon pulls a 88 Oliver and one of the Hills pulls a 88 Oliver at the classic pulls.

Hows this for a 5000 lb puller?Roy Tallon from Heyworth,Ill on his 4010 at Pleasant Hill,Ill 1969.Had to take his short off to make weight.LOL

Re: Check Out This 4010 At Pleasant Hill January 03, 2010 12:04PM
that is correct on dad pulling at p-hill
as far as pulls go they have been trying to get something going again after the last flood
our assoc has been trying to work with them but it seems like there is always a problem getting a sled scheduled or something

The signs in the background made me think of Pleasant Hill. One was KPCR Radio from Bowling Green Mo. I think one of the dj's from that radio station Joe Lewis may have been the announcer.

i dont think i have ever seen a tractor stripped that far to make wt,would this have been in a "stock" class or a modified.

Re: Check Out This 4010 At Pleasant Hill January 03, 2010 01:31PM
This 4010 pulled the 5000 lb tractor class. He was pulling against 180 AC's,Wards,U MM's,460 Farmalls,88 Olivers,M's-etc.I doubt that there was a 5000 lb tractor there that had much over 200 horses because they used a 6 mph pace tractor. At this pull they had 5000,7000,9000,and 12000 classes for tractors with the factory engine. They had a 15,000 Open class for anything plus 5000 and 7000 Hot Rod classes for the V-8's.I have the results wrote down for this pull and need to find them.

Not that many years later 4010's were pulling at 5500 lbs with 3 chargers, wide fronts, and 30.5's.

Yes, ther is a pull back at Pleasant hill UPA puts it on and Sonny Mckinnon is now running a 88 oliver with a V-8 in it!

Marvin didn't ever pull with a Detroit. Pulled an 806 in the early to mid 60's, then a 4010. He still has the M that his dad, Darvin, pulled for many years. The 427 is still in it. I helped him get it started several years ago. Sounded like it could go out and lay down a pass. His dad started pulling with an 861 Ford in the 50's. The blown tractor he had went to Larry Mitchell and Lonnie Frieden from Monmouth. I see Mitchell occasionally at dirt tracks where his son races a modified.

I'll bet it was lots of fun going to the pulls with Claudie and the Musicks.I can remember the Musicks driving the M around in the pits in a real low gear at lots of rpms. They came over to Bethany,MO several times in the early 70's..It was one ofd the highest revving mods around back then.I know that I have a picture of it somewhere.

Speaking of Lonnie Frieden I'm almost sure that I have a picture of his old Mod that was taken in 1969 at Pleasant Hill..I remember it being an orange F-30 that said Lonnies Texaco on it.I just looked at my notebook and Lonnie pulled the 7000 Mod class at Bethany,MO in 1972 with a F-30 that had an injected 427 Chev.

Back to Claudie Woodworth, didnt he sell the blown F-30 to Robert Kollmeyer at Farmington,MO?After that it may have went to Eddie Govro and was called The Blue OX?

Not sure what happened to the F 30. After that he built another blown mod with a 1650 Oliver rear. Didn't ever pull it much, got busy farming pretty big for a while and then got out of pulling.

I remember that mod being pulled at the MO State Fair in the mid-late 70's but have no picture.I know that later on things didnt go well for Claudie and his son.His son emailed me once to see if I had anymore old pictures of the F-30.

The last time I talked to Claudie and Jackie, they said that the tractor was being restored by someone and it was being put in a pulling museum somewhere but I must admit I don't recall if they told me where. They had Claudie out to look at it to see if it was as it was when he built it.

Re: Ron Perry-Solid Junk G-1000 At Bethany,MO In 1971 Plus Blown F-30 January 04, 2010 03:30AM
i have a f-30 wide tread,i couldn't imagine puttina v-8 in it and 24.5 on.it would be at least 12 feet wide.im assuming the tractor you guys are talking about is a narrow tread.
