stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 18, 2010 12:17PM
We are thinking of stroking our IH 466 out to 5.75 stroke and staying with stock bore. Does anyone out there know of any suppliers that have the right pistons we need or will we have to have some custom made? Thanks in advance.

The Navistar DT engines are currently available in three configurations. These have been updated to comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's new 2007 emissions regulations. These variants have been renamed to conform to International's new MaxxForce engine brand.
*MaxxForce DT: 7.6 liter (466 cubic inches) displacement, bore x stroke 4.59 x 4.68 in (116.5 x 118.9 mm); with horsepower ratings from 210 to convert|300|hp|abbr=on. The MaxxForce DT is available in standard and high torque configurations, which provide extra torque. [http://maxxforce.com/products/details.aspx?classid=2&itemid=003]
*MaxxForce 9: 9.3 liter (570 cubic inches) displacement, bore x stroke 4.59 x 5.75 in. (116.5 x 146.1 mm); with horsepower ranging from 300 to convert|330|hp|abbr=on. This engine is similar to the MaxxForce DT, but the piston stroke is increased to raise displacement to 9.3 liters. [http://maxxforce.com/products/details.aspx?classid=2&itemid=004]
*MaxxForce 10: Same displacement as MaxxForce 9, with horsepower ranging from 310 to convert|350|hp|abbr=on. This engine features stronger components, such as steel-crowned two-piece pistons, strengthened engine block, and a titanium turbocharger turbine to cope with the extra power and stress of severe-service and heavy-duty applications. Well then that was a very informative answer that never answer the question asked. I think they were looking for someone to supply the parts they were looking for, for that type of setup.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 19, 2010 11:26AM
mr.isbell is saying you are basically taking a dt466 with 4.59 bore with 4.68 stroke and changing the stroke to a dt 570 configuration same bore but a stroke of 5.75 so why not look for dt 570 navistar parts to fit in your motor, but i,m sure ther are others who know different configuration that may work a lot better consindering rpms running, type of head flow, little things like that.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 19, 2010 01:10PM
We pull 2800 rpms with a 2.3 turbo limit stock appearing pump.
We don't want to go bigger then that turbo can feed. There are guys that tried 540 in the IH's that choke off just like the 466's do at those rpms. That's why we were thinking of a longer stroke.

Im pretty sure he has the old DT466 as in 4.3 bore 5.35 stroke. So now the question what he is asking is......... if he increases stroke does anyone make pistons that will fit the stock 4.3 bore. After all the "new generation" 466/530/570 doesnt bolt directly into a tractor to my knowledge.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 20, 2010 05:29AM
you can make the new gen stuff fit but it is alot of work it doesnt just bolt in.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 20, 2010 10:34AM
This is very true. I have 2 engines right now of mixed parts from new n old. And yes they dont just bolt in. BUT I still think his question is about older stuff

Assuming he is using the old DT, will the rods miss the liners with that much swing on the crank? Not sure how it would fit with the 4.3" bore. With a 5.75" stroke you would end up at about 501ci with that setup. I always wanted to take an ih 540 (4.625 x 5.35) and try a 6" crank to make it 605 but wasn't sure how it would work, not sure if the rods would miss the liners.

Just thinking out loud, but, why not use a 414 piston and stroke the crank .275 and pistons would come to deck height and you would just have to cut pistons to reach correct compression ratio. 5.350 plus .275 stroke would make 5.625 stroke using stock parts.

You may want to rethink that statement after a good nights sleep.Confused

ok your right larry disregard everything i typed i was going the wrong way thanks larry it sounded tooo easy

Can you say DECKPLATE

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 21, 2010 01:03PM
SOUNDS LIKE AN EXPENSIVE WAY TO ONLY GAIN ABOUT 35 CUBES. WHEN A STOCK 466 CAN BE MADE TO RUN WITH
MOST MOTORS WITH 2.3 CHARGER AND A STOCK CORE PUMP. A GOOD CAM, PUMP AND CHARGER WILL DO JUST FINE.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 21, 2010 02:47PM
Stroke the crank 1/4 inch cut down the stock pistons make a easy and relatively cheap 488.
The machining of the pistons does get real close to the top ringland.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 23, 2010 02:34PM
You said earlier that the charger is choking the 466 and really choking the 540's so why do you want to go bigger if its already being choked? Your chasing your tail. All you need is a good 13mm model 100 decent cam ground specificaly for your rpms and set up and a charger you can get under that 2.3 limit with a big enough exhaust housing so you dont cook it and atleast be able to get rid of the exhaust outta the poor thing. That 466 will run with anything at 2800 and that baby charger. Last time i measured a box stock 3lm it was 2.5 inlet and they choke a 466 with a good pump so i can just amagine how choked it is with that small of a turbo. Save your money and put it into getting power outta the 466. Then when it does break you know u can get parts easily. you start doing weird combos and then its hard to get parts. Plus that stroke would never clear the bottom of the liner with that small bore. Look at a stock 466 and how close it is.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 23, 2010 05:59PM
Out of the box 3LM measures does 2.3 and that's what we are running. We got a good pump, injectors, and cam shaft already. We even tried the High compression pistons. And are running the plus head. We need more to keep running high third in the 13000. Any other bright ideas why bother?

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 24, 2010 12:12AM
Yeah, get a gear between 2hi and 3hi......pretty cheap to do.

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 24, 2010 11:21AM
Already got 2.8 and 2.6 takes 3rd to even place. Any other ideas?

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 24, 2010 02:13PM
build a lighter tractor or go to a better color

Re: stroking a IH 466 with stock bore October 24, 2010 03:14PM
Can you run a stock IH intercooler. If so run one with ice water in a box and pump it through the cooler, it will lug like no other. Or water injection would help as well. If neither of these are possible, play with your inj timing, I hope you still have the intervance. If you still can't spin out try different tires, different bar, inflation, size down. Don't know what cam you have but you may want to call Jeff Suits for a cam, his stuff works, you could also play with your cam timing, move the intake lobe center to 95 or so, this will advance the cam, close the intake valve earlier ABDC for a better cyl fill and will open the exhaust sooner to drive the charger harder.
Now get busy making that thing work.

Was you able to do this with the 466 piston and sleeves or would rod hit sleeve
