DT466 pistons October 28, 2010 01:53AM
I was told that the new pistons for the dt466 has a higher top compression ring. Is this true? If it is true,is there any where to buy old style pistons new? Thanks!

It is true. eBay, somebody from California sells them new 12 at a time once in a while.I bought some a while back. Just pistons no pins.

I found a set with part # 684255c2. Would this be the low ring piston?

Re: DT466 pistons October 29, 2010 01:00PM
684255-c2 are the old style pistons with the lower ring grove.

Re: DT466 pistons October 29, 2010 04:34PM
what would be the advandage to the lower ring groove? If you were to build a 466 wich would be better 436 pistons cut down or the 466 pistons? and what would be the best turbo to run with either setup at 3000rpm?

Re: DT466 pistons October 30, 2010 01:06AM
The lower ring grove allows the top to be cut off and valve reliefs to be cut in for extra lift on a reground camshaft. Total combination makes the difference. In limited rpm and open rpm in my experience stock compression ratio with a small turbo worked better. The reason for using the pistons are to compensate for lost compression ratio when cutting the deeper valve reliefs. If you can run open rpms and a bigger than 3lm size turbo the compression needs to be less.

With a dt466 crank use the 436 pistons.
With a 3/8" stroke on a dt466 crank use the 466 pistons.

We ran a Hyper Max turbo. They can tell you the best one for your application. It ran for year trouble free.

Re: DT466 pistons October 30, 2010 01:43AM
Hey floyd will a 466 crank stroked 3/8 swing in there with a stock bore? And then your saying use the 466 low ring piston and cut the top off 3/8 also?

Re: DT466 pistons October 30, 2010 11:53AM
If you stroke it 3/8" you only need to cut 3/16" off the pistons.

Re: DT466 pistons October 30, 2010 01:56PM
The only clearance problem I had was the block had to be ground for rod clearance and like previous post said. On a stroke you only gain half the increase on each side of the crank. piston goes up half and down the other half on strokes with same size journal.

Re: DT466 pistons October 30, 2010 03:35PM
who would you get to stroke the crank?

Re: DT466 pistons October 30, 2010 03:39PM
do you have the number for the 436 pistons to use that have the lower ring grove? Thanks.

Re: DT466 pistons October 31, 2010 07:33AM
Any good machine shop close to you should be able to do the job for you. save a lot of shipping cost. I don't have that number handy but if you call 1800-377-1297 tell them what pistons you are looking for (old style) they will get the number you need.

Re: DT466 pistons November 02, 2010 08:58AM
Hey floyd, did you ever run a 466 stroked 3/8 ? Just wondering what kind of clearance issues you ran into with the stock bore and cutting off the tops of the pistons

Re: DT466 pistons November 02, 2010 11:37AM
yes. still run it. just had to grind the side of the block inside to clear rods and bought old style pistons.cut the pistons and ran it.

Re: DT466 pistons November 02, 2010 05:54PM
And how good did it run then?

Re: DT466 pistons November 08, 2010 08:45AM
engine runs great. I added a bigger turbo and just working on dialing it in.

Re: DT466 pistons November 09, 2010 01:43AM
was it big enough increase in power to compensate the cost of stoking the crank.

Re: DT466 pistons November 09, 2010 06:52AM
crank was $1500.00 still had to cut the pistons either way. Still working out the bugs. big stroke in low rpms. big bore in high rpms , taking into consideration head flow rate and turbo size.

Re: DT466 pistons October 17, 2016 11:07PM
whats the differents if you run 407 rods and cut the top off of the piston?

Re: DT466 pistons November 03, 2016 01:08PM
If you run a 436 piston on a 466 rod and take .25 off the top will it last or burn out?
