11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's December 31, 2010 12:21PM
I think that most of these pictures were taken at Bethany,MO around 1971-72.

The Findley twins Red Baron 806 out of Albany,MO.Pulled both 9000-12000.

Ron Warschkows Little Puff 7000-9000 IH 806 from Iowa Falls,IA.This is the first 806 that I ever saw get in to the 7000 class.

Don Wiss and the Yellow Fever G-1000 MM from Hawk Point,MO.I hope the guy from Texas that owns this now sees this picture.

I'm guessing that this 1466 is Ron Bayless from Flanagan,ILL.It was the first IH that I ever saw run road gear.

This has to be the Ralph Mathis D-21 out of Elkhart,IA. I think it was called R C's A Bomb. His youngest daughter used to pull it some.If Ralph were still alive today he would be 100 years old.I'm looking at a 1975 IA tractor pull annual to get this info.

This has to be the 6030 pulled by John Bockwitz from San Jose,ILL.He had the only NF 6030 puller that I can remember.

I'm not really sure whose 1066 this is.I dont have the 1971 results handy to see who all pulled a 1066 at Bethany..

This may be Elwin Peareys IH 856 Custom from Cambridge,IA? Later Vern O'Dell at Richmond,MO had it.

I want to say that this is the David Wiss 856 but its been too many years.

This is the famous Duster 1206 owned by Dickie Sullivan from Naylor,MO.I think that this picture was taken at Springfield,MO in 1971.I'm a 1206 buff and once owned two of them, still have one left.

A F Yaricks Orange Krate 190 XT from Rich Hill,MO.DB had some pictures of it on here recently. It won several times at Bethany.I think that this picture was taken at Springfield,MO in 1971.

I was sure happy to find these pictures yesterday as I hadnt seen them in over 20 years.

What were some of the rules back in the day?
What pump, turbo, could they use?

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 01, 2011 02:30AM
Pretty much NTPA rules .In the early 70's at the most, they ran a inline pump with 1 big turbo. There were still lots of IH's and AC's with Roosamaster pumps.By the mid 1970's twin turbos were becoming common. The first twin I saw was in 1969.It was N D Harrisons 220 AC from Pittsfield,Illinois. The 2nd was the Cajun Queen I from MO.

these are really great pics bg you have over done yourself i was just a kid when these were taken but i can still remeber alot these guys. thanks again ps what is the contraption on the side of the d21?

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's December 31, 2010 04:14PM
the d-21 looks like an orange version of ,the p-s solid junk.im thinkin the big square boxes are a intercooler of some kind..these old tractors have something that most of the newer tractors lack...character

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 01, 2011 02:36AM
The tractors definitely had character in the old days. There were lots of home made intercoolers and quite a few used ice in them. There were no turn key pullers back then. You pretty much figured it out yourself.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 01, 2011 03:00AM
Yes sir, I saw the yellow runner picture from the real early days.Thank you! I guess this was between 1973 and 1975 because mr. wiss said he only had the single turbo for the first year or two then went to the twins.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 01, 2011 03:04AM
Was the yellow runner ,yellow fever first? or wrong tractor. sorry

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 01, 2011 05:07AM
This picture is probably early enough that Don Nolan from Owaneco,Illinois still owned the tractor.Thats why its called Yellow Fever. It won the 12000 at Bethany in 1970.Going from memory I think that Don Wiss bought this tractor from Don Nolan around 1974-75 and changed the name to the Yellow Runner.

Next time you talk to Don Wiss find out when and where it came from.It was a single charger tractor the first few years Don W pulled it.I wish that there were some more old timers on here so that we could keep each other lined out.MM was in to pulling pretty heavy in the late 60's and early 70's.Some of the MM pullers were the following.

Perry and Stangle
Greg Herriot
Don Nolan
Charles DeClerck
Myron Riddle
Joe Pat Hughes
Tommy Oliver
Gary Quick
Bill Newlon
Virgil Neisen

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 01, 2011 12:13PM
do you have any pictures of rustys red rocket? and john klug's 856 red baron?

Klugs 856 January 01, 2011 12:42PM
No pictures of Rustys old 1256 but if you go back a page or 2 you will see his 1466.I have what I think is a picture of Klugs 856 in 1971 at Bethany,MO.We discussed this picture on here a few years back and some thought it was Klugs.

db,if you are out there do you have any pictures for us?

ernie ropp January 01, 2011 12:55PM

Re: ernie ropp January 01, 2011 01:11PM

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 02, 2011 07:59AM

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 02, 2011 12:30PM
You are correct.Harold pulled a 180 Massey in 1969.Thats not a tractor that got pulled much.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's January 02, 2011 01:02AM
That is the David Wiss 856 tractor. Never seen it with the big white tank on the side, I guess that is a LP tank since it was legal then. Others I have noticed have that also.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 01, 2013 02:16PM
That is an old picture of David Wiss' tractor. The white tank was the intercooler. We ran that a couple of years and we filled it with ice water. I wish Dad would if taken more pictures.. Thanks for showing this. David Wiss

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 01, 2013 04:19PM
How about the hauler with the 6030 on it. Three house trailer axles with a 12000 pound tractor pulled with a pickup.Speaking from experience I bet he changed tires coming and going. Things sure have changed.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 02, 2013 12:01AM
What year did David Wiss win at Louisville and what class?

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 20, 2013 03:35PM
Dad finished 2nd in 72. I dont remember the class but I will ask him..

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 02, 2013 03:05PM
Ever hear of a Ford 5000 from MO called Old Smokey? Owned by Fred Eflein gone but never forgotten!

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 03, 2013 12:16AM
Wasn't he from New Haven or Herman, down there somewhere, and I think he had some relatives, maybe nephews that pulled a Ford 8000 for a while.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 03, 2013 12:38AM
Yes, Fred was from New Haven, MO. It was his son-in-law Merl Pohlman & Merl's brother Marvin that pulled the 8000.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 20, 2013 09:54PM
Do anyone know whatever happen to the Findley brother 806 called the RED BARON out of MO. Seems to be that the Brothers sold the tractor to someone at a pull one evening but nobody seems to remember who????

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 21, 2013 11:13PM
Last Dale knew it was in Minn. but not sure where.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 22, 2013 02:18AM
Bad Medicine I assume your referring to Packman. I'll give him a call, Thanks.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's February 22, 2013 02:24AM
I think he was referring to dale findley.

Re: 11 Pics From Bethany,MO Early 1970's April 15, 2016 05:44AM
Hello, I was born in 1970 and grew up around tractor pulling. I heard a lot about the River Rat and the Cajun Queen. Were they both 4430 Johns? Or 6030s? I found some old pictures of the Cajun Queen, one was a 4430 and I think the other was a 4020 did the same guy keep the name and just keep getting bigger tractors? From what I was told, both of these tractors were the biggest ones that john Deere made at the time, when they dominated for quite awhile until an International guy from Mo. Caught up with them? Is that correct? I'm not sure what years that this all happened, but was thinking it was mid 70's to early 80's, is that correct?
