trucks November 06, 2021 12:11PM
I'm looking to buy another truck to pull my 14,000 lb. pulling tractor on a dual tandem gooseneck trailer. I've got two that I'm considering a 94 F350 dually with a 7.3 engine or a 98 3500 Dodge with a 12 valve Cummins. Both have manual transmissions with OD. My concern is them having enough power to handle that load. I have a FL70 with a 3126 CAT that won't pull the hat off your head when it comes to a hill. Pulling my pulling tractor will be the only job for the truck, not a everyday driver.

buy any other truck that dont have a 3126 for the money dont buy a pickup

Without modifications neither option is a great choice and neither will pull that kind of weight up a hill in a expeditious fashion.

The 12V Cummins with a few small modifications will give you a lot more reliable power (500hp+) as compared to the 7.3l Ford and the manual NV4500/NV5600 trans will hold up just fine but might need to move to a double disc clutch.

Personally with that kind of weight I would go with a newer diesel pick-up truck or move to a medium duty truck with at least 300-350 hp.

That FL70 would have to be a real pooch to not pull that better than either pickup would.

Agreed... probably not enough gears or it is not right. You can get lots of single axle tractors for cheap and can get rid of the fl70. I have a '88 IH 2375 that needs lots of work with a big cam IV and a 9spd runs great for CHEEEEAAAAPPPP!

The 3116 had the fuel rail you could make them run but wouldnt hold up you could get a programer and run it till it pukes

my dads 94 f350 with 6 position chip dually 4x4 5spd four door pulled my dads 10,000 lbs tractor just fine, the chip doubled fuel mileage also and that's with factory gears not sure but prob 3:90 or 4:11s
