rpms to check timing August 20, 2009 08:32AM
wondering what rpm range is good to check timing on a-pump with a light
static timing at 51 now by flywheel
light shows 51 at idle-800rpms
48 at 1700rpms
45 at 2100

seems it would be somewhere around 40 or lower when leaving the line at 5,000
is it most common to check at idle?
any experience/ thoughts here?

anyone?

we check lots of engines with the light and some times they will swing pulse due to excessive rack travel and unstable fuel delivery. The only time we ever saw one loose time like you say is if it was lacking fuel to fill the barrel fast enough.

hmmm... well... got a tuthill style supply pump, 40 psi at idle and 55 at 3000.

always thought that its normal to see delay in injection event as engine speeds up w/o advance in the pump... or is an a-pump supposed to advance w/ rpms?

or could it be that through all the equipment used in using a light (pulse sensor, electronic box, then timing light itself) is causing the delay as the engine speed increases

thanks for insight so far

Wondering about this also ,Mine does same thing.

do you know if you have a 2000 or 3000 series a pump? and where are checking the pulse from? next to the pump or up by the injector? On the dyno when we check them we have seen some loss by the pump but not more than 5 deg. tops and that happens when you are getting close to the maximum fuel setting. We never check them up by the injectors so i cant tell you if they loose there.

checking as close to injector as possible... will try checking at pump
