are john deere 4010 and 4020 cases the same. Will a 3 speed for a 4010 go into a 4020 case or what do I have to change.

are the gears on the pinion shaft the same? Would the shifting still work the same? Could I just make a new countershaft and input?

As has been previously mentioned in other posts, the 4020 trans case is about 1" longer than a 4010. You will find that there is almost NO interchangeable parts even though they appear similar and operate the same. The gears are ALL slightly narrower in the 4010 case, so the shifters and pattern are just slightly off from the 4020 as well.

Not sure this is the news you wanted.

the 4010 gears will work fine. you just have to make spacers to make up the 1 inch in the case. you have to get new shafts for the the counter and top.
