what engines will fit in a 560 diesel January 31, 2011 12:45PM
i have a 560 diesel and was wondering what IH engines will fit this tractor without too much modification

A factory 282 or a D-301 out of a combine will be the only direct fit engines. Anything else is gonna take work. Smaller engines like the German 310 or IH 312/360 may fit easier than a 466, but the 466 can be done (and has been).

what work would it take to put a d310 in it?

What work would it take? Adapter plates!!! They were used in late 686's so if you can find the parts from one of those (good luck) you probably wouldn't have much trouble. Or find someone who can make a backing plate, and probably a custom flywheel. I have never done this swap myself, but I know it has been done. Perhaps someone else here has done it and can tell you better.

You won't want the rear engine plate from a 686, they had a smaller clutch housing like a 460. For a 560, you should be able to use the rear engine plate from a 310 powered 706 or a 756.

The 310 german diesel was also built as 358 and 402 with more stroke, with the 402 having a lot stronger block. Friend of mine has one bored to 505 cui in his hot farm (which is radical - but possible).

You can install a dt400 series or a dt360 by using the backing plate from a 966 and will bolt right up to the 560 bell-housing ,

Out of curiosity, it is fesaible to put a DT400 series in a 560 to use as a typical farm tractor? I am just curious as to whether the stock 560 rear will hold up to that series of engine.

I think it would be fine if you never pull any more than what a stock 560 would do. But then, there would be no reason to do it, unless you have an engine laying around. I plan on pulling mine some, just local stuff, and I'll take it to a few plow days, but no more than a 4-bottom.

Doing a 560 with a 400 series right now. PM me with your email if you want the details.

go to [localtractorpulls.com] watch the video of our 560 with 466 non turbo then go to
[customtractorparts.com] and see our backing plates for installation same thickness and shape as 560 bell housing. 66 and 86 series tractor will work but they put everything further forward and that means more spacing on flywheel. Floyd Isbell 570 637 1311
