Help 4320 Won't Start May 01, 2012 12:37PM
After finishing buildin my 4320 404 engine I can not get it to run on its own fuel. If I spray ether into the turbo it will fire. There is fuel going into the engine because of smoke coming out of the exhaust. I also made sure to bleed the lines. It has a .450 roosamaster. It is set at 14* for start of injection. Diesel guy says it should start no problem at this degree. I have heard many guys with a similar set up end up running 30-40*. Any thoughts?

Are you sure you're not 180 deg off ?

Re: Help 4320 Won't Start May 01, 2012 01:14PM
was the timing set at tdc to be begin with? sounds like it mite be 180 out. have you ran this pump before?

Re: Help 4320 Won't Start May 01, 2012 01:47PM
first off, if your pump was marked for beginning of injection, and you put it on at 14* ? Very retarded timing for a roosa since it is a variable beginning of injection pump, based on load. JD times their roosas to end of injection on stock situations. The other problem is you need to put a manual shutoff on a very well built 450 roosa because at start up it will dump way too much fuel in the cylinders on a cold engine. Manual shut-off allows you to slowly open the metering valve, solenoid is on or off. Once warm, they'll usually fire right up without restricting. Good luck!

i installed my pump at 32 * BTDC. If you think you are 180* out take the vaule cover off and roll the motor over untill both number one vales are closed. Look in your site window on the right side of the clutch housing you should see TDC. Then back it off to what ever degree you want to inject the fuel BTDC. Then install your pump.

I do have the shutoff and ease fuel into it. I am positive it isn't 180* off. Timing marks line up on cam and crank gears while flywheel says TDC. Is 14* too retarded to start? The advance on the pump has also been removed. Does 32* work well?

I'm not a Deere guy, but I would not take for granted that the marks being lined up on the cam and crank gears necessarily means that the engine is at the #1 firing position. I can think of specific examples (other makes) where this is not the case. The best (and foolproof, in my opinion) means of finding #1 fire is to rotate the engine (in the correct direction!) while watching the valves. When you observe the #1 intake valve open then close, continue rotating until the TDC mark lines up. This will be #1 firing position, assuming the flywheel is marked correctly. If the pump is not 180 out, the cam is degreed correctly, and the valves aren't too tight, low compression for another reason or an issue with the pump itself are my only other suggestions. Though I do not believe it to be the cause of your starting issue, I'd back the opening pressure of those injectors down a bit before it kills your pump.

What engine kit did you install? You may want to do a compression check, We had one that had the wrong pistons and the compression was too low to fire.

I didn't install a kit. Engine was said to have ran when I bought it. When I said, "finished building my engine," I meant cam, head, injectors, and pump. Thanks for the input though. Still open to any suggestions.

do you have no. 1 cylinder in the 5 o clock positon on your pump?

Yes I do.

Aound there. Bought them off a guy that ran a identical set up.

guessing you mean 3600. That is way too much for a 450 roosa. 3000 is all you need. What size holes did you have put in the nozzles?
