856 with a 466 August 30, 2012 08:49AM
So i have an 856 that I'd like to put a 466 out of a 5288 that had cought fire what would all be involved in getting it too work. I'm interested in pulling 3000 rpm limit farm stock. The reason I don't pull it as it sits is the 407 thats in my 856 has a melted crack thank you any info will be greatly appreciated.

You will need the front and rear engine plates from a 966-1566 986-1566. Your frame rails will have to be changes. and the front bolster will have to be spaced out for the wider front engine cover OR get the front cover from a 666 Diesel.

Im doing a similar project with an 806. So if you find a 666 front cover, are you still able to use the rear cover from the previous mentioned tractors? whats so different in the timing covers? just gathering info, thanks!

Re: 856 with a 466 August 30, 2012 02:16PM
The width of the timing covers between a 666 cover & the rest of the 66/86 covers is the difference. 666 is narrower between the framerails than a 766 thru 1586. 666 cover works good with the framerails of an 06/56 series.

I'm sure the ears on the larger tractor front covers can be cut down to fit inside the 06/56 series framerails, rather than widening the 06/56 rails & using spacers for the bolster. I've seen a few that are this way. Can't say I've ever done it myself, though.

You can machine the ears off, we've done that so we can clear the c-channel frame to get the front cover off, then use spacer blocks to fill the gap, works good to get the cover off, just clear the crank nose and lift it out. I would think the no "eared" truck cover could work as well, you would have to makeup some kind of mount for it but it could be done, truck parts strike again!

What did you use for the rear mount?

I just got done shoe horning a 466 in a 1256. if your going to make it (stock appearing) its a ton of work. There are several good remedies posted here for the front cover fix. problem is they dont mention the backing plate on the 400 series is 1-7/8" wider and sticks out like a sore thumb between your frame rails and TA housing. . so you have to machine that. also the pump is on the wrong side, so you have to transfer all the throttle linkage to the other side. plus the fuel tank wont clear the valve cover or the turbo, so you need to cut the front of the tank off and weld a plate on the front of the tank, so it no longer hangs over the engine. or replace the tank if your rules allow that. another issue is the radiator and the fan. the bottom hose on the radiator is backwards from a 407-466 so either change the bottom tank on the rad, or do some creative plumbing. then find a fan to fit within the smaller 856 shroud or go to an electric. other problem is your going to find your hood and hood skirts are 2" too short. so you need to hunt up a 1026, or 1456 hood and skirts. but if your going to run a fluid dampner then your hood is going to be about 4" short. because a 4386 style dampner wont clear the wet steering bolster. then just go and get another 806, 856 hood and add onto yours, same on the engine hood skirts. It can be done. but if your looking to do a nice job its not easy. I just got done doing a 1256. there was alot of swearing involved. main reason I did it everyone around here in wi in the improved farm class has a 1066. how boring. I cant stand showing up to any givin event with 12 other 1066, 1086's. its nice to see a sharp 56 series for a change. take your time and you can get the 400 series to look like it was born in your 856.

our class you dont have to keep the stock tanks, and you have to run side panels. Are saying the skirts on the hood are too short from front to back, or the height? we are also required to run electric radiator fans due to the 3250 rpm limit. Im wondering where the extra two inches comes from, is it due to the adapter plate? I found a guy on here that can make the adapter plate, so the width wont be an issue, and I would also think the thickness would be much less since It wouldnt be cast. I am building an 806 for the same reason, something different for a change. I'd do an 88 series if they werent so danged expensive to buy a donor. haha.

If u really hunt u need to find siderails from an 806 GAS tractor because thier rear engine plate is narrower so u dont have to motify the side rails at all a 1456 hood works well also and the hole is in the right spot for the exhaust to come out. We just made a bracket that bolted to the back of block to go across for the throttle to switch sides. The fuel line wasnt that big of an issue u can rebend the old fuel line to hook up again. We put a 466 in an 806 also used to pull with it and now sets in shed all the work is done for u if ur interested thanks

you boy are messing up u can get a ton of power out of the old 407 and 361s alot cheaper then going to the 466 we have a 407 putting out around 700 hp and a 361 in the 600 range it can be done you just got to get the set up right.

How so? Im not familiar with the older motors. Im just going to a 466 because I have a gasser Im converting to run so Im always open to options.

Re: 856 with a 466 September 20, 2012 11:05AM
the d361 or the d407 are extremely strong but the parts are a little harder to find, they are very easy to get power out of and they will handle alot, the pumps are harder to find but you can get a ton of fuel out of a 450 roosamaster.

Re: 856 with a 466 September 20, 2012 10:03PM
Everything you have said is the expensive way of doing it. Just put a 466 in. Its cheap power. We repowered our 1456 with a 466. It wasnt that big of a deal.
