18.4x38 radial tire pressure June 05, 2012 05:45PM
Double cut 18.4 x 38 radials. Where should I start out on air pressure? 9500 lb hot farm.

Somewhere in the 20-25 range would be good depending on track conditions. Less pressure on looser tracks and more on a biter. Less is always better as long as your motor can handle it. Smiling

Really that much pressure- we always run around 15 never went as high as 20

We generally run right around 19 psi

What's right is a matter of what works, and everyone has an opinion based on their own experience. I run 1 psi for every inch of tread width - 20 psi in 20.8's and 18 psi in 18.4's and have yet to see any benefit in deviating from that baseline by more than 1-2 psi.

Were running 20.8 bias 23 degrees at around 15 psi and we are having problems with our tractor hopping bad sometimes. Usually starts at the 100 ft mark and gets worse by the end. Sometimes i have to let out of it so i dont break anything. Should i really be running 20 psi? Seems high. Some of the guys we pull with tell me theyre running 14 with no hop.

I run 24-26 lbs in my 18.4x38 radials. Never have hopped

hot.
Do them guys run radials??

Im not sure

Re: 18.4x38 radial tire pressure October 02, 2012 05:42AM
Im guessing they are running radials thats why they are able to run that low psi

Re: 18.4x38 radial tire pressure October 02, 2012 06:17AM
So your saying i should be running around 20 or so to get rid of the hop and bounce? I figured i was running too much

Re: 18.4x38 radial tire pressure October 02, 2012 07:00AM
I would say try running 18-20 in them once to see what happens. Running too low pressure in a bias ply tire for several runs will ruin the sidewalls. Radials can handle it, bias can't. This may have happened to you and may be why you are bouncing so badly. Hopefully they aren't ruined yet. I had the same problem years back in the 9500 and had to buy a new set. I wouldn't believe everything you hear from the guys you run with. In a lot of cases they will be the first to lead you in the wrong direction. Just my .02.

I think this winter you should just try to find a set of radials
