Alcohol Engines October 02, 2012 12:57PM
Hello,

What does it take to make a gasoline or diesel engine run on alcohol?
Does it take a high compression engine to ignite and run properly on alcohol?
Is there a big power advantage to running alcohol?

Thanks

The biggest advatege to alcohol is it runs alot cooler the better raceing gas can make as much power if heat wassent a issue

Alcohol doesn't require higher compression to ignite, but it does have a higher octane rating, so if you want to use a higher compression ratio to make more power you can do so with alcohol with less fear of predetonation. In the garden tractors we use as a rule of thumb that you have to double your fuel flow rate when switching from gasoline to alcohol. Gasoline likes around 12:1 air/fuel ratio, where alcohol likes around 6:1.
