switching from a 3lm466 to ????? October 02, 2012 04:39AM
we are thinking about changing the rules in our 3000 rpm class to allow a different turbo, looking for ideas or suggestions on what a good "out of the box" turbo would be, we have deere's ih's and cases that run in the area and obviously the idea in the 3000 class is to keep costs afordable for guys, but personally i feel it's time to move past the 3lm, also we are thinking of going to 3200 rpm. So thoughts and opinions. I have had guys suggest a S2b or a S300 would be good ones to use

Oh i see, i guess i could have been clearer.

The gt new is over a thousand.

It's very reliable and will make good power.

Whatever u choose keep it box stock or the money games will really begin

The main thing to consider on an intercooler is what you can fit. Bigger is better but you are usualy limited on space and mountings so that typicaly dictates what you get. Spearco and Bell make the top of the line coolers but they are big coin$$$$. There are lots of outfits that build coolers from cores and tanks. I have used several off ebay and they worked well. If comparing the same size to the same size cooler from a cheapo to a bell you might see 30hp/1000hp difference. If you have to have that last bit of power it may be worth it to you, but its not to me. The main thing is waterflow as a cooler needs a lot of water moved through it to cool the air.

S300 (for an 8520 JD, is just one of many applications). It has a 2.36" wheel, 2.400" inlet bore, MWE slot, and works great, readily available and reasonably priced.

At 3200 a 2.8 gt42 is a pretty good option also

did you not see the part about trying to keep costs affordable, i dont want to spend 3200 for a turbo just to go to a pull and win 50 dollars tops, it dont make sense to spend that much.
i'n response to the s300 did ih ever use that charnger

Re: switching from a 3lm466 to ????? October 03, 2012 04:24AM
U need a new turbo vendor if a stock 2.8 gt costs u $3200.....

If cheap is what u want stick with the 3lm. If u want more it costs money

Re: switching from a 3lm466 to ????? October 03, 2012 04:38AM
sorry when i read your post i was confused, when you said at 3200 i thought you ment thats what it costs, not realizing that you were refering to 3200 RPM'S. my bad......what does one cost though? i realize that it will cost more looking to find an option under a $1000

Re: switching from a 3lm466 to ????? October 03, 2012 05:25AM
The S300 I'm referring to (and using) is priced slightly higher than a 3LM466. Well under $1000!

Several years ago when the hot farm was just starting here we had 3000rpm and 2.5" inducer turbo. You can get a 2.5" s400 with .090, .100, .110hsg's for $850. They are pretty much indestructible little turbos and cheaper than the s300's. If you just go s300 for a rule then there are inducer sizes way bigger than 2.5" and you are looking at the possibility of 800-900hp. With a 2.5" inducer no wheel or cover modifications or reducer bushings you will keep it closer to 700hp. One thing to consider is intercoolers. You can buy them for less than a turbo and they will make your engine and turbo last longer. Plus for some reason if you blow a turbo the intercooler catches the parts and doesn't trash your pistons and valves running aluminum chnks through them. You could keep your turbo rule the same and run intercoolers and pick up some power and reliability for less money.

would or do you use a factory inner cooler or aftermarket? i've heard that the factory ones will split apart? is an s300 smaller than a s400?

Re: switching from a 3lm466 to ????? October 04, 2012 05:22AM
S300 is smaller yes

definitely aftermarket intercooler.

I'm running a GT-42 with a 101 exhaust housing and 2.8 inlet on a stock 7.6L Deere at 3000 RPM with a 10mm A-pump and its making rigth at 600 HP without a cooler. It cost me 1,200.00, fairly cheap in the grand scheme of things. Just my 2 cents.
