hey bryan,im kinda into old school stuff and got a question for ya.i once seen a picture of a person with the last name conner from greencastle,mo on a massey 203 ss.wasa this a tr of your family.im to thinkin these had a 427 continental flathead i-6 in them.in some military junkyards ive been to ive seen what appears to be a ohv conversion for this engine, ive also seen a bb ford head adapted to these blocks in na form.im curious as to what kind of head you guys used, how it turned out, i really enjoy the unique aspect of it.i think you and ernie would be a great interview for miles if he hads a old school section on his blog, esp covering the white jd and the bad medicine days....thanks patches |

Patches,
Your right, we (brother Ernie and myself) campaigned a MH 203 until 1989 when we sold it to Doug Palmer, who then sold it to Roland Clinton. Started with the flathead Continental until Gary Overton from Cananda got approval for the overhead version of the 427 Continental approved and we started over with it. In the mid 80's we updated the sheet metal to MF3505 to give it a more modern look. We used the stock 427 head filled with hard block with minimal porting done as the head was thin and fragile in stock form. We pulled the 5,7,9, and 11,000 pound classes in Missouri TPM back in the day and won several state championships with it. We debuted the 4010 with 3 turbos, aluminum head, and newer sheet metal in 1989. NTPA outlawed us running it in all 3 classes for points that winter (5,7,and 9,000 lb classes), thus we built the White (Oliver 2255) 2-180 that winter to campaign in the 7 and 9,000 lb classes. The biggest problem (other than poor airflow) with the ohv version of the Continental was the two center cylinders were not located directly over the bores, so you had severe valve overhang of the exhaust valves (if memory serves) in those two bores. It was a learning experience in fuel injection to overcome that served well for our later endeavors! Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Bryan Conner |
