IH 3088
|

Got an IH3088 with d358 with a list of issues. What would be a good transpant; d360, dt360, or dt400series? The 400 series would be best but the length is gonna be an issue cause of the fan and shrouds behind side shields. If 3688 underhood parts could be found it be would easier. Just looking for some input. this would be for a farm tractor possibly pull but stock only. Thanks! |

It's a lot cheaper overall of the 360 that it is any of them German motors. They're not worth really anything I had a neighbor take one out of an 886 |

I can sell you a good dt 466 or dt360 for around 1200.00 or a rebuild kit for your 358 and save you some money on that fix the 358 is my advise 270 566 2901 unless you do want to play some the 466 are 210 hp stock |

400 series would make quite a tractor out of it, but like you said you will need parts from a 34 or 3688. A dt360 should give you plenty of power, be very efficient and fit right in, given the correct adapter plate and accessories. You won't miss that kraut engine! |

The 358 would be a great motor to keep in it. If you spend the money for a rebuild kit and run a injection pump from a early dodge with a 5.9 there are a great and reliable engine. |

we got over 12000 hours on a 358 and still going. granted there is more then enough blow by but she still rakes hay all summer. I would keep that motor but that's just my opinion. |

Thanks guys for your input. I just bought this tractor super cheap, I know its history, its only got 2200 org hrs. It hasnt had an easy life. Sat outside most of its life and not alot of maintenance. Tried driving eight miles home the other day and as you started pulling hills and really bringing the engine up in temp it started knocking and pushing blowby. Shut it off and hauled it home. Once home and cooled down, purrs like a kitten. Temp gauge is working, thought maybe thermostat, nope not even one in it. Its got coolant, and water pump seems ok without removing. Any thoughts? Woudnt mind keeping the 358 in it, just not familiar with the german motor. would make a nice fixer upper to keep org. Thanks! |

I have a 756 that my Dad bought new in 1970. It has the little brother to the 358 in it. the tractor has 9000 hours on it and uses 1 quart of oil in 150 hours. It has been cared for over the years but I think the Kraut motors are really good. |

So the 310 and 358 are the same family? Is the 407 from that family too? |

360 and 407 are brothers. Then you have 414 436 466. Confusing and i'm a red guy! |

The 361 and 407 are the same family. The 312 and 360 are from the 300 series family.

Ok, maybe I had the wrong number. I thought Sasha talked about there being a 40something in Europe. Which family does that one fit into? |

Try looking at the water pump , same thing happened to my 1680 and it was a bad water pump. |

310 and 358 . here is a link with all the info on the Neuss, Germany built engines
312 and 360 are just smaller versions of the 400 series or sometimes called melrose engines (414,436 and 466) Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 01/21/2014 03:07PM by FordPuller9000. |

So, what can someone tell me about a DT 408 and what can that bolt up to for tractors? I'm told it's in the same family as 310 and 358??? |

DT408 was in the same series as the DT466 and will bolt up to the same applications. I've seen several in early 90's school buses. |
