help on decubing Ih llss

I'm looking for some beginner advice, I have been getting ready to build into a llss, and my plan is to de stroke a 414 Ih on alcohol. In doing this, am I ok to use the ih rods as long as they're hardened? Do I really have to use aluminum rods? Also what about using diesel pistons for the time being? Just looking for some thoughts and suggestions on how to go about it, thanks. |

That motor is 4.3 bore and 4.75 stroke . How much stroke are you planning to take ot to get to 370 ci? |

Strictly looking at the numbers
Keeping the stock 4.3 bore you need a 4.25" stroke to get 370 cubes. Keeping the stock 4.75 stroke you need a 4.0625" bore to get 370 cubes. |

to keep the 4.3 bore he needs to lose 1/2" stroke , and if your spending that kinda $$ for de-strokin , why not buy a good set of rods and pistons ? if you de-crease bore then your intake valves will hit the sleeve , not much clearance as it is ! thats my 2cents |

You could run the 300 series block and hit 370 cid really easily. 312 crank with Darton common 4.25 sleeve blanks and a set of deere 4.25 pistons will do it. Plenty of good 300 series engine parts out there, and with the 4.25 bore, rods are easily pulled out the top, and a respectable intake valve can be achieved. |

If your going to build a red one put a 5.9 cummins in it. Its been proved that any other combo cant run with it. |

cummins are a lot cheaper to work with. I wish I would have went with another cummins instead of the dt361 I just built I .if you need cummins ih or ford engines give me a call and also the Detroit style engines out of busses 270 566 2901 |

So what possible special part of a Cummins makes it so much better? |

Why not use a DT 360? Easy to find and very durable |

Bottom end of a Cummins is very strong out of the box. |

What about using a D360 from a 766? Far from an expert, but it seems to me you'd keep a good head design, a bore that won't have valve shrouding issues, and have stroke, so important late in a pass. If I'm wrong, as always, I appreciate the schooling. |

The Cummins is newer technology. Almost everybody works on them, making parts cheaper. |

After working with both engines in this same application, do yourself a favor and use the DT. GMS has done quite a few of these. Call them. The DT is a great engine and very simple and strong. |
