Several use an electric snow plow pump with a pressure switch in the line so it doesn't run all the time. Good for 15-1600 psi. around $300 +$70 for adjustable switch.

Silly question but what are the reasons to switch to an external pump?

Northern Tool & others have the pump. McMaster-Carr has the switch. Reasons to switch are usually removal of power robbing & uneeded hydraulic system, changing dampener that doesn't have pump drive hookup are a couple reasons guys switch.
