4010 vs. 4020 rearend December 06, 2014 05:18AM
What makes the 4010 rearend lighter than the 4020 rearend? I know the 4010 has a 3-1/8 axle shaft and 4020 has a 3-3/8 but is there something different with the internal parts or is the casting not as thick on a 4010 rearend?

The casting on a 4010 is alittle lighter and the axle housings are lighter also. Most of the gears and shafts are a little shorter and lighter. The pinion gear is also a little weaker because it only has 6 teeth where the 4020 has 8 teeth. The planetary gears on a 4010 are narrower than the 4020 also.

What would be better to use for a Super farm or pro farm set up.
as for durability ease of getting parts and building??
Thinking about getting into pulling and want to start out right.
Please and thank you.

Not looking for a builder to go to we will be building our selves.
We were into racing and looking for a more family orientated sport.
Who would be some suppliers?

We are in Wisconsin

4020 would be stronger since it has more teeth on the pinion but if weight is a problem, you can use a 4010 and put a 4020 ring and pinion in it. It does take a little machine work though and it makes it go faster.. You can also put the 4010 planetaries on the 4020 to save weight and it also makes it go faster as the 4010 planetaries have a different ratio.

Also to be taken into consideration, we had an early serial # gas 4010, and the entire trans/rear case was lighter than my late serial # diesel 4010. Don't know if it is just an early serial # thing, or a gas vs diesel thing? Having had both of them apart, I could see where some differences were. In our case it was to the tune of 200+ pounds difference.

One thing to think of when using 4010 or 4020 rear end is if and when you need parts it is getting harder to find 4010 parts that are in good shape . Something else to think of is that 4020s are out there i larger amount, if you look the 4020 and the 4320 share the same rear end .

Some parts of a 4020 and 4320 rear end may be the same but transmission parts are definitely different. 4320 has longer and bigger shafts and the bearings are also larger.

I would agree . I would use a 4320 rear ed and trans over a 4020 because of the size. I unerstand that you work with what you have , I realy like the extra room that you have to start with,it also depends on the rules as well.
