407 rods with 466 pistons May 20, 2010 01:45PM
I have heard of guys putting 407 rods with 466 pistons what does that do or make?

Re: 407 rods with 466 pistons May 21, 2010 02:04AM
I tried that on mine and the pistons would come out the top of the moter so eye put a 414 crank in it and it didnt make good power then.

Hum... I wonder why not. Thats verdy intaresten Kernal, and I thought thier was magical power in them thier rods.

The rod it's self is longer.
You can not just change the rod from a 400 series to a 407 rod.
Some of that there magic is the rod angle.

So what all would you have to change? What would it help? torque? more horespower?
thanks for info

Re: 407 rods with 466 pistons May 22, 2010 02:20AM
This is a basic lay out.

I theory the rods being longer would increase both tourq and HP

The length of the rod will reduce the angle of the rod from point A to B.

This will help reduce on the side load (force) on the rod freeing lost HP

If you measure your Rod Center to center and then the 407 if the 407 rod is X longer then the wrist pin location would have to be moved upward by that distance.
Or if possible take it off the top on your piston, but remember compression ratio's

Or a sorter stroke crank but this decreases cubes

take a piece of paper and at the top in the center put a 0 then toward the bottom off to the side put another 0 now take a ruler and connect the two 0's

Put another 0 about 1'' straight above or below the one you put off the side and now connect the new 0 to the same 0 at the top this is a way to very basic way to see what distance makes on a angle.

now there is not a 1'' difference between the rods this is just to give you a idea.

just like walking up a long ramp to get to the top takes less effort

Re: nice answer May 22, 2010 04:04PM
Thankyou for that answer. I'm not interested in IH but that was one of the nicest explanations I have read in a long time. Too often a question turns out to be a contest on who can be the biggest comic. Reallity is that not everyone knows everything and sometimes it is nice to be able to ask someone that could and does reavele the answers Thanks Again Mr Hayes

any time i can May 23, 2010 02:41PM
Ya I find most of the time many of the sujects turn to.
finger pointing, trash talk, and the last comic standing.
I know some people can get over passionate with there answers or statements even the calmest

Re: Rod length May 23, 2010 10:25PM
What is the rod length difference between the 466 and 407 rods???

Re: Rod length May 24, 2010 01:57AM
400 series rod: 8.442" center to center

407 rod: 8.751" center to center

That's what I have jotted down on some scratch paper.

Re: Rod length May 24, 2010 03:29AM
Has anyone ever taken a 466 with a 3X3 charger and tryed the longer rod????

Re: Rod length May 24, 2010 03:39AM
The advantage of the 417 rod is that first of all they are way beefer. Number two reason alot of people use them is you can use i belive 2294 case piston on a 466 crank and make a prett cheap 540 motor

Re: Rod length May 24, 2010 04:04AM
There are alot of opinions on rod length and what works better and so on and so forth. There are many other variables that come into play other than just the length of rod here, such as cam grind. compression, RPM's, head flow, turbo, fuel pumps, injectors, etc that will make your engine run. It is all about the correct combination of parts, no mater the length of your rods.

Re: Rod length May 24, 2010 05:15AM
Seems like you IH guys really like to talk about your rod length................Like who has the longest or who has the beefiest........... Who are Y'all tryin to impress????????? Confused
