IH 436 defference from 466 December 16, 2012 11:12PM
Got old 986 we possibly may part out for our 1066 pulling tractor. Thinking dino setup. (Spare parts). What is the difference in a 436ci and a 466ci for IH. Is it just the crank. Also would head be different? Since 986 was non aspirated. Last question is would the trans and rear end be very similar other then ratio. That we can change if shafts are same and could be bolted up. I see brakes are different but could prolly be worked with. Anything anybody can answer could save me lots of reading.

A DT436 and a DT466 are the same thing except the stroke (crank). what you have is a D436 and is of very little good to you, the head is a high swirl naturally aspirated head (not usable in a turbo charged setup) and there’s no piston oilers. as for the transmission and rear end all the cast is interchangeable on 706-3688 so there shouldn’t be any problems there, the speed gears I believe are all the same count in a 9 and 10. the only difference is the rear end is slower on the 9

they sure did i can also show you a 686 srait from the factory with a 358 in it one owner only thing ever done to it was a tubo added at 2hour and 15 minnutes at the dealership lots of 966 tractors had 436 some had 414 the 686 was dealer owned and was ordered to pull

the last 3 guys are correct about a 966 never having a 436 in them. why on earth did that guy order a 686 with a 358 (i assume you mean the german motor) in it. The 686 already had the 300 series block in it.

No 966 ever had a 436 in it from the factory. All had 414 just like the 1066. Only difference was the 9 was n/a andthe 10 had a turbo. The 1466 had a 436.

I worked at the IH dealership and the 966 had both engines more in my area had the 436 engine and there was several 666 tractors ordered with the 360 engine someone knows nothing about a ih if they think 966 tractors didn't have a 436

I've got a factory 966 sitting in my shed with a 436 in it. Also it has about 12000 hours on it.
