2 1/2 gear for IH 1256 September 13, 2015 03:06PM
Can someone explain what I need to get to split 2nd and 3rd in my 1256.

I have the stock 1256 rear and trans in my tractor.

407
450 roosa
3lm 466

farm stock. too much power for H2 - not quite enough for H3,

Other thought would be.... what can i do to increase cubic inches in my 407.

have to have original block.

Thanks!!

May be a foolish thought, but will it lug it in H3 with your T/A back for the whole pass? Are there any problems with doing that??

It seems like the stock T/As cost you a lot of momentum in those higher gears. We have a similar setup with a lot of tire tread and have a tough time spinning out in H3.

As for your engine, Blackstack would be a good guy to ask here.

Pull the sleeves out, bore it a little and find some 429 pistons.we ran a set up like that for years.you can get any gear combination you want from atlas, allied,or other parts builders.

I'm really confused how can you have too much power for 2nd but not enough for 3rd I've watched several guys pull in a 10 mph class then at other pulls they pull in 15 to 18 mph class then maybe even a open class and run road gear. The first time I went to a badgerland pull I kinda thought it was a joke 8 mph but I've seen several of those guys run 18 mph in open

Depending on how setup is it can take LOTS of extra HP to run 2mph faster.

i guess its not fair to say i have too much power for H2 but i can launch with the torque ahead, go down and spin it out with out pulling the t/a and never really pulling it down.

H3 i can get out there 280-290 but dont have enough juice to spin it out at the end.

Blackstack - I can have up to 466 cubes and can run up to 3000 rpm. 2.6 in turbo.

Want to keep the 407 as i feel like everyone has a 400 series. Fun to be different.

The DT429 piston & stock stroke will get you 440 cubes, or you can go stock bore & have the crank stroked an extra 1/2" & be at 450 cubes.

You have to have the original block, what about your cubic inches & your engine RPM?

Would a 5.3 inch stroke add up to 466 at a stock bore? How much grinding needs to be done to make that go?

Re: 2 1/2 gear for IH 1256 September 15, 2015 11:31PM
I had a 407 with a 5.35 stroke in it. it takes some grinding but definitely the way to go

Hey Kevin,

What crank did you have in that 407 to get to 5.35" stroke? They surely can't stroke it 3/4" can they???

Sounds like a great set up but my machine guy had kittens when I wanted a 1/2" of stroke.

We got one stroked .800"
