How deep does a guy need to cut the reliefs in the pistons on a 504. My cam is a Vogel |

Carefully check clearance as follows. (you didn't say if you have valve reliefs already) Install cam. Degree in where Vogel says to put it. (assuming you had the head off already) Make a ball of kids play dough about the size of a marble, put 1 in intake and exhaust valve relief on the #1 piston. Put head on with only 1 or 2 bolts near cylinder #1 tight, but no need to torque to spec. Install pushrods in cylinder #1, and install rocker assembly, set valve lash where Vogel says to set it. SLOWLY turn the motor over by HAND, not the starter. Watch the opening of the valves as you turn the motor over by hand, as they get near full open, if you feel strong resistance, stop & back up--don't bend the pushrods. Remove the head and see if the play dough is completely flattened out. If no strong resistance is felt, turn over motor 2 times so both intake and exhaust valves opened and closed. Remove head, measure the thickness of the play dough, subtract that from .120 and have valve reliefs cut that deep. If you have not removed the head, leave the degree wheel on, and as you approach TDC, say 40 degrees before TDC make a tool to push down on the valve and "feel" for the top of the piston. As you get near the top, put a dial indicator on the valve, and watch the clearance as you push down on the valve until you feel contact with the piston. At its closest point, subtract the number on the dial indicator (clearance) from .120, and have the valve reliefs cut. Another way is to take 1 piston out, have valve reliefs cut .120 deep, then put it back in and do the clay method, then have all pistons machined to the proper valve relief clearance. Have fun. |
