Faster 4430
|
Howdy,
I am rebuilding a 1974 4430 power shift with a little over 20,000 hours. I am tearing down completely down and building it back up to good as new. While I'm at it, I would like to speed it up as much as possible. I have heard that 4010 final drives are faster. Is this true? Will they go right in the 4430 housings? Is there a faster ring and pinion? How about the "transmisison gear reduction" gears from a 4440? This tractor will mainly be used for stationary PTO work so strength isn't my biggest concern but I would like to get to a 25 or 30 MPH road speed at 2100 RPM. |

Does anyone make a higher geared ring and pinion set? That would be the easiest and possibly cheapest way if a set was available... |

4010 finals will work and will speed you up buy about 12%.That will equate to a half gear, probilty about 3or 4 mph.It does require some work though as your rear end housings were you axle housings fit in are slightly smaller than the 4010 housings. You have to take a die grinder and remove enough material for you axle housings to fit,you also have to relocate the spots were your brake plate recesses in you housings.I have done them, takes a couple hours per side.that 3 or 4 mph would be in 8 the gear . Do I have to use the 4010 axle shafts or will my 4430 shafts work? |

4010 axles are 3 1\8 4430 axles are 3 3\8,no the axles them selves are not interchangeable. |

So the 4010 axles have to stay with the 4010 planetaries? |

You will find that only the very earliest 4430's were 3 - 3/8. JD soon (after a year or so?) made them all 3 - 5/8.
You want to go fast down the road, go buy a JCB. Dairymen around here seem to love those tractors. The powershift tranny is nice & smooth. The big new tractors are hauling triple and quad axle manure tanks. They fly down the road, even when loaded. |

4430 never came with 3 5\8 axles ,they came on 4630 and 6030.All 4430 and 4240 and 4055 all had 3 3\8 axles.Besides has nothing to do with the guestion. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/08/2017 12:45PM by jd402056. |

There were some 4430s with long axles that had 3 5/8 axles.Doesnt make sense as first 4440 had 3 3/8 but I buy and sell several tractors plus duals and hubs and have personally seen some. .Going to step up 42 rims and also increasing RPMs would get you there. |

Actually it wouldn't. 4010 final drives (12% faster) and 18.4R46 tires (13% faster) will only get me to 23 MPH. Couple that with 2500 RPM and we are at 27 MPH. 42's and 2500 RPM would barely be 23 MPH. |
