M-H rears March 19, 2017 11:45AM
How much hp will a M-H 44 or Cockshut 40 rear end handle safely? Thinking about a single engine economy modified of sorts with an estimated 800 hp.

Either one should handle 800 HP. The cockshutt 40 will handle it better especially if you don't run the tractor trans, they will handle a lot more than that without the trans. We have run oliver 88,they will break at 800 HP but the 1650 will hold up pretty well. The last one we bilt was a ford 4000,again the tractor trans won't hold up very well but the reared will.

Todd,(S'no Farmer) is right LJ, transmissions are the weak point on a lot of the older tractor rear ends. It also depends on the weight class of the modified economy class you're planning on running. Massey Harris 44's are an old mainstay, but as you start to get about 5,500 lbs. they start to fail. It's not as much about the horsepower as it is weight. The differential in the Cockshutt 40's & 50's are the toughest out there when it comes to really old tractor rear ends, but as S'no Famer says, the transmissions not so much. The Cockshutt's are unlike practically any of the other of the old conventional bull pinion, bull gear configurations. The bull pinion and bull gears are supported on both sides of the gears by bearings, thus decreasing gear deflection under high stress loads. Of course, inboard or outboard planetary differentials are normally the toughest, but some groups don't allow them. Make sure of the rules of the group you're wanting to run before you decide which way to go. If you can run inboard planetary's, then I'd look at the Ford tractor rear end such as a 5000 or 7000 Ford, or any of their predecessors, especially if you plan on running directly into the differential. If you can run outboard planetary's, then there's a lot of choices out there.
