track building 101 June 09, 2018 02:37PM
Pulling season has begun. The track can easily make or break a event. Wondering if anyone had any tricks or helpful hints to building the perfect track. We have a tight clay track and will be running lss hss mods. Ect. Usually run a case ih 330 as deep as we can a good 8 inches. Depending on the rain we use a liquid manure tank to start adding water and then finish it off with a smaller tank and spreader bar. Wobble wheel packer and V blade. Should we be chisel plowing first to go deeper? Any help is appreciated thanks.

The secret is to know the amount of water needed to make your dirt sticky, damp, able to pack without being soft, each track type soil is different, being able to read the dirt is an art form.Blading off 6 - 8 inches with a road patrol is best, putting down water in each layer as the grader rolls a few inches back and pack in between, add water repeat, can't pack or water from the top.

builder, I am interrupting your instructions in 2 ways, each being 180 degree opposite of the other.

But, I assume you actually mean to take the 6 to 8" peeled off dirt and "putting down water in each layer as the grader rolls a few inches back" actually means to layer that peeled off 6 to 8" "back", you needing to add the word IN (meaning back in), to building the track height back to original. Is that correct?

Thank you for your help!

you took it "OFF", yes bring it "BACK" in layers with water, onto the track, thought that would be obvious. Cool if too wet it it off,(the track) !!!!!!!!!!!!! Real clay has a fine line between damp, wet, too dry and oh sh*t.

probably the most important thing on this topic is dirt does "wear out",theres a dozen tracks at most that don't need replaced.also in my opinion a 320 ft track must be maintained from the -60 foot area to a area of 360 feet at all times, this ensures a good quality of track condition at the start line and at the winning distance.nothing pisses guys off more than having the "track conditions" determine the outcome....

We work the track and as we water we keep working to mix the wet and the dry. A lot of the time we leave the 310 ft and on dry so that tractors will lose traction and just spin out. Helps keep the 340 ft distances down. We never water the starting line to make it easier to come out.

No dont do that. Really good way of Grenadeing a engine and tearing a set of tires up. Prep for the entire pull distance. If the sled cant stop them then you either need to be reset or a better sled.

To Tracker,-- by grading off some dirt to the side, you protect yourself in case of too much water,-- with dry dirt to the side, you can always mix in and blend.Seen too many great tracks ruined with one more pass of a generous amount of H2o,can always put more on,but,VERY HARD TO TAKE AWAY MOISTURE.Need to be very careful if opening deep with chisel or ripper, and adding water, looks good for a while,-- then oops we have soup or oatmeal mess.Best is to move an ample amout of dirt to the side, blade back and forth, and have a good spray system on leveler blade for ongoing track prep during pull, misting is the best way to control dust and make a firmer pulling surface.A grader takes out the humps, valleys and levels, packs and flattens,(with a good operator). If threatening weather,- don't "OPEN " track till just before pull starts.Fans, people in the stands, workers and drivers appreciate a good track,no one enjoys dust, looseness and or mud.

Thanks for all your good advise. Really not explaining things right. Only where the sled sits is where we don’t work So about 5 feet before the zero mark. Found the sled comes out easier. The end is just dryer. You’re right though sled should do the stopping.
