HX82 and HC5a January 18, 2013 07:00AM
What is the primary difference between an Hx82 and the H5 or Hc5a family of turbos? Also how do you determine the exhaust trim of the turbo? Thanks for the information.

The HX82 has a larger diameter compressor cover over the Hc5a, both of them use the webbed covers though and look very similar. The exhaust trim is determined by turbine wheel exducer diameter. Do a search and I posted the dimensions for the diffrent trims in the past.

The search feature on here didn't find it but google did.
There are 3 common wheels with a multitude of odd ones that are rarely seen. The common wheels are E,F, and G trim. They all have an inducer of about 5.1" and are 11 bladed The exducers for the various trims are: E 3.75", F 4.18", and G 4.37.

KTA,

Saw one today with a 13 blade exhaust wheel. Is that better or not than the 11 for tractor pulling app

Depends on your application. The 13blade turns easier but is more restrictive so it can make less power. In general I would say on anything 3.9 or bigger air wheel the 11 would be better than the 13.
