Making sbjd offset key for cam gear June 11, 2021 02:17AM
Anyone know how much to take off a keyway to get a 4 degree offset on the cam gear? Thanks

Diameter x pie / 360 x degree of offset

For example if your gear is 6”. 6 x 3.14 = 18.84 / 360 (360 degrees in rotation) = .052 per degree x 4 = .208 = amount to offset if gear is 6’

Wouldn't it actually be the size for cam nose?

Just asking a question for me to understand. The step keys we use are 1/4 x3/16. You wouldn’t get one step out of it at that rate. I’m thinking ( probably totally wrong). The math is correct on how far you need to move gear O.D.. Not at gear I.D. For some reason I’m thinking you’ll be like .012

Math is correct but you need to do inside diameter

Yes inside a little will move it a lot

What SBJD are we working with here?
If it’s a 404 from a 30 series or newer just press the cam gear off the cam hub, make the gears a slip fit then set your cam timing and weld it together.
4010\4020 then you’ll need an offset key.

My bad. As stated by others it would need to be calculated from cam nose. Thanks guys
